Because our employees are all part time and receive benefits from their spouses. It allows us to pay a hire hourly wage.
We offer because it is the right thing to do.
Healthy work force make us more productive, when your staff know you care enough about them to provide health insurance they are more committed to our mutual success.
I have no employees, but am covered by MediCare and TriCare for Life, the latter being a benefit of retirees of the military. I also can rely on the military hospital in any area of this country. I also agree that hiring either a vet or military spouse would help your bottom line in this quandry of "how do we afford to keep good, talented employees"?
I am an independent contractor, a real estate agent. My brokerage does not offer insurance to its agents. I do not have any employees/assistants that work for me.
Health insurance companies making big bucks while charging the public more. Higher premiums, higher copays and deductibles. They are also paying physicians less.
Offering healthcare is the right thing to do. It's also important to educate employees about the differences between a Flexible Spending Account(FSA) and Health Savings Account(HSA). Both lower employees taxable wages, for every paycheck. FSA is also great for dependent/daycare but it has a "Use it or Lose it" structure. If you put $2k into your FSA and only use $1500 during the course of its effective time, you lose that $500. HSA can be opened by anyone who has a High Deductible Healthcare Plan with a single person deductible of $1750 or more. Check IRS guidelines for full details. The HSA rolls over, YOY: put in $2k, only use $1500 and the remaining $500 stays in your account. Many banks and credit unions offer HSA directly to consumer - you don't have to go through employer. FSAs are through employer only.

Unfortunately, I am not able to afford health coverage even with the ACA subsidy. The healthcare system in this country is totally broken. Even when I was paying for coverage, I didn't receive quality care and only used it for preventative exams since the deductible was so high. Healthcare is a human right and I believe we need single-payor. It should not be a profit-driven system!
The Alpha Workshops was founded in part on the premise that ill health and disability need not be an obstacle to work - in fact it shouldn't be. Disability is no bar to ability. Weakness does not mean the absence of strength, of skill, of mastery. There is an intrinsically healing quality to being able to work, to create, to do. For our full time employees we offer healthcare. For all our employees we provide reasonable accommodations and a safe place were they can all be the amazing artisans they are.
