Employers, like individuals, have multiple options at various price ranges, and the benefits paid are usually tax deductible to the owner. Since so many employers today do NOT offer benefits, having them available to employees is an incentive when recruiting. Finding out what your options are as an employer or individual does not cost you a penny, so why make the decision harder than it is?
The way I look at it, it's to show you want to take care of your employees. My business has the means to afford it so why not invest in your staff and take care of them.
Offering benefits to your employees as part of your package will help you obtain and keep quality employees!
I know when I researched a company that offered benefits and a company who did not offer benefits I would see what they both have to offer and you have to weigh the pros and cons and I would choose based on my current and future needs!
With a small company it's expensive to get healthcare for under 5 employees. I offer a hsa. The employees I have and had are either in their early 20 and dont want healthcare or are married and have health care thru spouse. 20 years ago offering health insurance was easy and inexpensive for both the company and employee. But today it's all jacked up way to expensive for small businesses.
We offer healthcare because we feel it is an essential part of compensation and is just the right thing to do. If it is good for me, it is good for my entire team.
We use Medishare and offer to help cover some of the cost if they choose to participate.
I did offer paying 50% of health insurance when I owned a hotel and restaurant I still could not get my younger employees to take it . I have spent 40 years working on public heath and health policy at NIH, Georgetown Med school, the Hill and Columbia University. Having everyone covered is one the key elements in rationalizing our healthcare system.
Hence some system that provides universal coverage is essential to protect providers from the uncertainty of un compensated care
People need protection from the threat of financial ruin because of an illness
We cannot offer healthcare dur to the cost.
Health care has been a big pain, especially since the passage of the ACA. We offer it to be competitive in hiring and retaining employees. Before the ACA we had far better coverage and since then we have had to offer a far worse package and are paying quite a bit more. We have also had to cut back on what we offered. Before the ACA we covered the employee and his family with very little out of our employees pocket. Now we just cover the employee and if they want family coverage they pay the bulk of it. To cover the family at no cost we would be paying almost as much for health care as we would for wages.
After undergoing 4 major surgical procedures in past 8 years, accompanied by two near death experiences, I have a completely different outlook regarding Medical Insurance. Without it I would have been bankrupt and homeless... Our healthcare, in this country, needs a complete overhaul - period...
