"Should" cost is argumentative!

Without a doubt, healthcare should be affordable for everyone. But I believe society needs a reality check on what health care should cover and under what conditions. Self care and healthy living must be addressed or healthcare as a nation will never be affordable.

ACA was destined to fail for many reasons. We have an opportunity as a nation to make this issue a priority and fix for our future generations.

Everyone should get that annual physical and follow basic health guidelines.  How can you charge the same to a person who cares for their body and one who does not.

That question can't be answered!

With the ACA plans, the term "insurance" should be taken out.  Risk factors have been removed from the pricing, except for tobacco use.   So if you weight 800lbs, smoke like a power plant, had 3 heart attacks, you pay the same price as someone who is premium weight, takes care of his/herself, maybe chews a little snuff.

The cost of health insurance depends on many things, such as age, household income, number of dependents and where you live.

If you obtain your coverage through the exchanges, commonly known as Obamacare, healthcare.gov, Affordable Care Act or "ACA" plans, you may qualify for government subsidies. Subsidies are based upon household income and number of dependents. You can visit healthcare.gov/plans to determine your subsidy, choose plans and get your cost for each plan, net of subsidies.

It's important to note that ACA plans are guaranteed issue, which means you can't be denied coverage due to adverse medical history. However, if you are in good health and don't qualify for a subsidy, this can be unattractive because your premiums will generally be  higher as you are in effect subsidizing others' claims.

If you're in good health, you may qualify for a medically underwritten plan, which are becoming more and more popular. Through these plans, you are in effect rewarded for your good health. And once you secure one of these plans you can't be singled out because of future claims. Additionally, medically underwritten plans tend to have lower annual rate increases than "Obamacare" plans, due to the fact that fewer claims are incurred by the insurance company since all insureds have proven good-health prior to being covered.

There is also a plan now in which you can initially enroll in a "base" plan and be guaranteed the right to upgrade to a more comprehensive plan within 90 days of a large claim. These plans can lower your premiums considerably since you don't pay for much of the coverage until you need it. These plans are relatively new, and there is only one carrier that I am aware of who offers such a plan.

Another difference between types of plans can be which networks you are confined to when receiving your care, and whether you can see any doctor/any hospital from which to receive care. I'm aware of at least one medically underwritten plan where a PPO, or Preferred-Provider Organization, is available for individuals and families in Texas and also allows you to see any doctor or hospital, albeit at a higher cost. I'm not aware of any ACA plans in Texas that do not limit care to an HMO, or Health Maintenance Organization". This is a big drawback to ACA plans and should be taken into consideration when choosing the best plan for you and your family.

Too many factors, deductible amount, copays, income subsidize. For those younger than Medicare age, a Christian Co-op can  be a great alternative. Medicare is a little easier but then, what kind of coverage, Supplement, MedAdvantage, VA. Each person has to look at their situation and decide for themselves.

Health insurance should be like auto insurance. If you have a clean driving record your rates are low, if not they are high. If you're healthy why pay for high health insurance costs? They are high because everyone is paying for not so healthy people through the market place plans. Just my opinion.

  • On ACA plans
  • No insurance plan can reject you, charge you more, or refuse to pay for essential health benefits for any condition you had before your coverage started.
  • Once you’re enrolled, the plan can’t deny you coverage or raise your rates based only on your health.
  • Cost varies depending on age, county or state, number of dependents, income etc.

That depends on the coverage chosen? However, to ask a question like that without setting the parameters of the coverage desired is not a real question.

I’d be happy to ellaberate when the question has some parameters or more specifically what they are looking for? Without that I could give a general answer which has no basis on fact.  It’s like asking what you should pay for a car without mentioning the brand and type of car.

The prices range all over the board.

The clients health, prescription drugs, smoking status, and age will determine the pricing in the individual markets.  In the group market, the pricing will still use the above mentioned but will be averaged into the group, so the less healthy will pay the same premium as those who are in good health.

It is best to discuss your situation with a trusted insurance agent and let them (me) help you find the best solution for you and your family.
