I post for quality guys on craigslist and I am very detailed in my post for what we are looking for.... however... I interview them and if I hire them, and give them a try, I watch very closely and will know within about 1-2 weeks if this guy is good and ethical or just a waste of time. It is hard finding quality real persons in the construction industry. I go through a lot of guys to get one good guy. I don't waste any more time on someone that isn't to  our quality. Within 1-2 weeks I will know in most cases but sometimes sooner.... if they have a lot of excuses or ask questions an experienced person should know or other red flags, they don't last long. I would say that you have to try about 5-10 people to get 1 or 2 good ones. There is a reason that some are not working for a good company... some of these guys as so bad they are fired all the time. Just because they have pics and some references, doesn't mean these references are really real or true.... you could be calling a family member or friend. I just fired 2 guys because they take advantage of you and lie and cheat you on time and so forth.

Here are some things I found out over the years why they don't make it:

  • If they talk all the time and don't shut up
  • Don't have the tools for the trade
  • ask way to many questions
  • always have excuses for everything
  • their vehical and their personal life is a mess
  • not clean and organized on the job
  • try to sell other things or additional work to client without you knowing about it( going around you)
  • always late or car problems etc
  • always seem to have a DR. appointment and things like that.
  • always on their cell phone or girl problems....
  • and more
  • You can go through Indeed, this work well for us.

Brian,  It is very hard to find reputable employees.  I use Glassdoor, Indeed & Craigslist.  We interview about 70 people to fill one position.  It takes a full time person to do this.

Home improvements stores or online handymans some are pretty good out there...

Finding staff has been a challenge for us since the slow down. I assumed I would had my pick of the pack but it seems a lot of guys have left the province or are staying put with a company to guarantee there work.

For my part I find that I treat my guys differently than I used to I make sure they are happy and looked after as much as I can. It’s not all about money. A lot of people are struggling with many things in this economy. Some times a little love at work goes a long way.

Ultimately you have to figure out why an individual will work for you, over another company. What makes you better

    Hope that helps

It is hard to find good help today. But we use Craigslist and Indeed.

Hire character, above all else and everything will fall in place ..... It's a process understandably, depend on what scope and level, from the lot @ the Depot or a periodical want ad.Be it custom estates, commercial industrial props or track slam dunks they all need the proper lead man/ Anything to help others is a personal goal for Me!

Depends on how "quality" you want. I would pay a little and use zip recruiter. Otherwise take your chances with tge likes of Facebook Marketplace. Church connections seem to be reliable as well
