Would you ever promote your competitor?

Yes. If they are doing quality work. In the coaching/consulting world, "A rising tide" truly, "lifts all ships." I want people to know that quality coaching/consulting gets results. If people have a good experience with an interaction it lends credibility to the industry. There are several people and organizations I trust and promote or offer as options to my clients if I feel their is a better fit. Of course, there are many more practitioners I cannot and will not promote. (for the same reason)

I would definitely promote competition if I knew they were reputable and could handle the job. I personally work as a Pinterest virtual assistant and schedule pins for Teachers Pay Teachers. I always pin from their competitors. On that platform it’s a win for everyone when you make the most of followers.

Yes, because in my industry (pet nutrition) there is not a one-size fits all. If I don't have a product that can help a client, I have in the past and will in the future, refer them to a competitor if it fits their needs better.

Yes, sometimes a client is not a good fit for any number of good reasons.  As an accountant, I deal in relationships.  If their is not a good level of comfort, confidence and trust, I do not think the relationship would be good for either party and at some time bad feeling or mistrust will arise and ruin the relationship and not work for either party.  I would just as soon walk away from an engagement knowing that the client will be happier if they are working with someone they are more comfortable with.

I agree with several answers here. My comment - it's ALL about relationships and building trust.

If I don't have a referral club where the person lives, and they personally don't want to start one, and I know of another group could help them I have no problem suggesting they look at a different group to join.

The caveat I'd leave them with is when they get the itch to start their own, apply for a franchise, or know someone that might have an interest, to reconnect with me for the full details.

Do what is right, and you'll never be wrong.

Yes.  My primary goal is to educate the public as to the importance of estate planning whether they are simply starting with power of attorney documents, a Will-based plan or a Trust-based plan.  I hope to make the process understandable and help people choose which option is correct for them.  If one of the options for them is to pursue assistance through a competitor and they complete the documents I have been successful in helping educate the public about the importance of estate planning.  I certainly hope that the potential client will consider permitting me to help with their plan but am still happy to learn that a potential client has at least completed a proper plan even if they have gone to a competitor.

Sure if they specialized in something I didn't.

Yes I would. If a person is teaching/coaching using a different format from myself and being successful that’s great. I would refer clients and be happy to do so. I think it brings you more business by being positive about other business people working in the same field. My personal thoughts only here.

Promoting our competitor acknowledges that we are not the only game in town. We will recommend them for what they are good at, only. It demonstrates humility, and helps establish trust. While recommending a competitor, we will reinforce our uniqueness as a way to remind others that e are still the go-to resource for them.

Our organization is a bit different than most businesses that advertise here. We work with many different rescue groups and always try to help each other out. We and other rescue groups are not in this for the money but rather to save lives of animals and make our communities aware of the plight of homeless and abused animals.
