As a mattress manufacturer, we of course suggest buying in store because you can try out not just one, but several mattresses. You spend a great deal of your life in bed, so you want to make sure that you are getting exactly what you want. That said, you could also try other items as well, such as pillows or pillow tops. We do understand that this method may not work for everyone, though. It can at times be overwhelming if you have tried out many beds, to remember which one had the firmness or other attribute you liked.

Often, shopping for mattresses online, if you don't like it, you can return it. It depends on the company, though. Some take the mattresses back at no cost to you, others do, even if it is a small fee. Some donate the returned mattresses to charity, others resell them or dispose of them. Some provide packaging to return it in, others do not, so that expense falls on the consumer. We suggest reading the fine print if you're going to buy a mattress online, so you know exactly what you are purchasing, if there will be a cost to return it and where it will be going if you end up returning it.

Having Done Both getting one unseen is not Been Helpful

I own a mattress store in San Diego. We have a showroom, as well as an e-commerce website where we ship mattresses all over the country. In my experience, it is better to buy from a local store,  for price, service and the ability to try beds and get advice on the differences between mattress types and brands. People think the price is better online, but that is not at all true. Mattresses range in price from $99 to $10,000, and up. Value can be gotten online or in a store.

If I was buying a mattress that I had already tried at someone's home then yes if I liked it I would buy it online

other than that I would really need to lie on it in store as this is something I'm going to spend a third of my day on I don't want to be disappointed

Definitely in person. I need to lay on the mattress and see if the height is right and if the mattress itself is comfortable. Not every person is the same just as not every mattress is the same. Plus, you cannot go up to an online mattress and fall back on it! Where is the fun in that?
