Offer sound-blocking headphones, something like Bach's Rescue Remedy drops, and no surprises in the bill will help for most people. I usually go without the numbing shots which take too long to work (family genetics) - not for buttercups.

Tracy - Your suggestions for easing dental patients' fear are appreciated. Sound blocking headphones would be good for those who have fear associated with drilling, or for those who can't stand the sound of a dental drill. Bach's Rescue Remedy drops is an interesting idea, though there is little scientific information on the efficacy of Bach's products. Your mention of local anesthetic taking too long to work due to genetics is interesting. Usually, patients are afraid of the pain the injection may cause.
