I’m not sure I agree with your assessment of millennials, but you nailed the answer to the question.  If someone perceives himself as the worst on the team, it becomes a reality and unfortunately weakens the team. Truth be told, that attitude is an indicator that the individual  is not putting forth the effort to be a team player. Everyone who is truly committed to the team is capable of making a meaningful contribution to it. Success means thinking, acting and focusing on the “we” not the “me.”

Abel is “right on” recommending you to develop and market your own unique and distinctive personal brand. NO one can fill your shoes! You are your company and your company is you! I understand your frustration, but don’t let it defeat you.  (more) Abel is “right on” recommending you to develop and market your own unique and distinctive personal brand. (it represents my target market, the price of membership, etc.) Does the format allow me the opportunity to fully represent my business? (Will I have dedicated time to spotlight my business beyond passing out business cards and a 30 second introduction). Will the group provide me an opportunity to better develop my expertise and social skills? Is this group actively involved in the Community in which it resides? Most importantly, do I plan ahead and prepare myself to be fully present at each meeting I attend? If you honestly can answer those questions and like what you hear, then your time is well spent.

Assign realistic milestones (markers of accomplishments) which will monitor your progress as you fulfill the objectives. This allows you to invest your time and dollars incrementally. It is based upon not only what you can afford, but on what you are willing to focus your efforts to achieve. Make sure that whatever course of action you decide upon pursuing is measurable.

If they are still not committed, I would offer them a "Sorry we can't meet. Let's plan on getting together next time I'm in the area." As you mentioned, you are a busy person. It is not unreasonable for them to respect your efforts to connect. I would follow-up with a note, and some information about your business if you haven't provided it already. Best of luck!

Next step is to put together a measurable marketing strategy that you can act upon over an extended period of time. Yes, it is important to know your target market, but keep in mind that it is probably the same audience all your competitors are trying to reach. Get creative. Talk to qualified experts that can help you discover your unique brand identifier that answers a specific need. Best of luck
