How can you introduce yourself in a networking event when you do not know anyone and there are thousands of people? From where do you start?

I've actually been thinking about that myself. When I used to network, I would just walk around the room and observe and listen to what people were talking about and once I found a group that i could contribute to i would interject myself into the conversation and then introduce myself. It takes me a while to get out there but by the end of the night i have at least 3 or 4 people's contact info.
