So, you have to target your marketing to the audience you want to work with...specifically, door hangers to canvas those neighborhoods where your clients are...it's worked well for me. However, what's worked even better is the referral network I've built with the local Veterinarian staff, groomers (mobile and storefront) and kennels. There's nothing better than having my favorite Veterinarian clinics call me to say "we need more of your business cards, door hangers, pens and magnets...we're out, again!" THAT's the best advertising money can't buy!!! Finally, I always send thank you cards when I get a referral from someone in my network! I include four more business cards in the thank you note and encourage them to keep sending me business. It's old-school...you have to hand write a note, address and envelope and use a .50 postage stamp, but it works!

(more) Carey, Your business, much like mine, is pretty geographically specific...the advertising net you need to cast to reach your target, and most probable audience is pretty small. Therefore, unless you can get your social media ads narrowed down to the geographical area where your prospects are, you're wasting money (and time). That being said, I've not gained many new clients from advertising via social media. I have used social media to respond to posts by friends, neighbors and colleagues I know are close by and piqued their interest about pet care that way. But, the advertising route hasn't been frutiful. My greater client development effort comes from networking with the groomers, veterinarians and other pet care providers in my city...most importantly, my existing clients are the best referral base I could ask for...I couldn't afford the amount of positive PR they generate for me when they share their experience with their friends.

I do zero advertising...all of my business is referral based from my clients, the Vets and groomers because they know they can trust me. I've been in business almost 8 years!

Thomas, in my business, I offer a small discount (25%) off mileage to new clients...once they become a returning client I offer a 50% discount off the mileage rate...but that's the only discounts I offer...if a client wants me to cut my rate further I explain to them that in order for me to pay... They're not going to be a good source of referral business for you, anyway.

Door hangers in the neighborhoods you're targeting. This business is so localized, direct contact in the area we want to connect with has worked best for us! I would check out your local farmer's markets, health food stores groomers and veterinary clinics that appreciate organic products. Be sure to check with your local taxing agency (or CPA) and see if you are required to have a resellers license (Franchise Tax Board here in CA). Then, be sure you can verify your products as organic if you are marketing them that way. I would also suggest you meet with a Small Business Development Center (SBDC) representative and have them help you develop a sales and marketing plan that works to meet your Business Planning goals. The SBDC is a FREE service, available nationwide, and is paid for through the Small Business Administration, which we taxpayers fund when we pay our federal taxes. You may also have a local SCORE mentor program with retired business professionals that can help you for free, as well. Good luck!
