I agree with your insights. In fact they are many of the reasons I stay in business. I have worked with over 500 small businesses, teaching them how to start, stay, and grow their businesses. Corporate theories and techniques are not at odds with small businesses - they need to be revamped to be appropriate for the small business owner. Having a talent, I call it widget making, (woodworking, engineer, auto mechanics, etc.) is normally what makes a person want to start a small business. But having the talent and running a business are 2 separate skill sets. So I concentrate on the "running of the business" so the talent can turn into cash. It can be done - and it is done - but it takes guidance and learning.

* How much control do you need to handle this situation? If your employee can do it, you can monitor the progress much better. If no employee currently has...

* How much control do you need to handle this situation? If your employee can do it, you can monitor the progress much better. If no employee currently has that skill set, can it be taught to get the work completed in a timely manner? If you hire a contractor, make sure you are very clear on the result because you have little control on the method. That control belongs to the contractor.
* Take time to look at all your options. If this need is not constant, would a temporary employee be the answer?
They are both good. I am Microsoft Office and QuickBooks certified, so I am partial to those products. But which one are you more comfortable with? Explore where you are comfortable first and see if that works for you.
