We are a consulting service providing 5 star service 24/7/365, and our rates are very fair, so we really don't have promotions. Personally, my opinion is old school, Halloween stuff should start happening the first week of October, Thanksgiving promotions start right after Halloween, and Christmas promotions shouldn't start until at least a week before Thanksgiving, giving people plenty of time to prepare for Black Friday! That's what I remember from my early adult days, late 80's...I just can't get into the Christmas Stuff hitting the floor sometimes before Halloween is taken down. I know, "Grumpy Old Man" right? I just feel like as the season has gotten longer, the excitement of each holiday has been stretched too far, watered down so to speak, and by the time I hit Christmas morning, I'm so over it all, I just want to take everything down and get ready to start the New Year, with the hopes of making positive changes to the world in the coming year.

I don't know of any policy currently at our company, but my personal opinion is recreational, when legalized, should be treated the same way alcohol is in most businesses. In my past, the policy is don't show up inebriated from the previous night, and no drinking while working on the clock. Simple and makes sense to me! When it comes to medical, I think it should be treated as any medicine, take what you are prescribed...as prescribed, unless it may impair your job functions, in which case you have to deal with it individually. Again, just my opinion, not the views of my employer!

I find the art of networking to be quite exciting and have not only found customers through the years, but some of my networking opportunities have led to a couple contacts becoming lifetime friends. Many people are shy about networking, but I have found that it helped me tremendously to realize and keep in mind that many of the folks that come to networking opportunities, have little experience with networking and are there having the same fear of walking up to a stranger and starting up a conversation. When I understand this simple truth, it makes it much easier to mingle and meet people.

I have worked for Civil Engineering firms with a staff of 3, to a staff of thousands (Kimley Horn, 2400+ nationally). I have seen a variety of incentives over the years, but the idea I thought was the most effective was more of a relationship builder which added an incentive to keep using that firm as their consultant. Our Practice Builders (Licensed Engineers that had branched into their own client list that had may be several key clients that have the potential to become million dollar clients) handled the work for their clients with the energy and care needed to not just get the job done and permits in hand, but to go above and beyond expectations, which impressed the client. One of the techniques I saw used with clients who became close, was to present the client with a special remembrance at key points in the project or at the completion. An example I remember was a client who loved the Boston Redsox...in 2013 the latest year the Sox won the World Series, one of our office Practice Builders had traveled to one of the games and he bought a ticket for the client in a seat beside himself at the game...during the game he took a few photos with the client, got his ticket stub signed by one of the famous players and bought a jersey. Most would stop at bringing their client to a game he had dreamed of seeing....and would have greatly impressed the client. This practice builder went a step further and had a professional company frame the items he had collected at the game including a great photo of himself and the client in the stands. He also had a silver emblem on the display commemorating the people and dates involved. This served to cement the relationship with the client, which turned into a friendship between consultant and client...to this day, that relationship has grown to be a real teaming effort, which benefits each party. Adding personal touches to commemorate events was by far the best relationship builder I've seen in 33 years in the business!
With a business that's been around for along period of time in the same local, most of our promotion comes from word of mouth from satisfied clients.

Trying to forecast the coming workload as the economy changes and our government seems to be in a continuous state of turmoil. When it gets busy, the reaction is to hire more people to fill the needs. At the same time there is a nagging concern that we are on the brink of another downfall.

I define the value in our services as the degree to which your customers are satisfied in your recommendations as their consultant, and their willingness to return with more work and/or their desire to spread the word of their success with other potential clients , driving more work into the doors.

I personally think Social Media pages, including sites such as Alignable are the most effective both in reach and cost. With a small business, word of mouth is also very important. Sometimes, offering satisfied customers a referral bonus for sending other clients your way is enough of a carrot to get more people in the door, creating more satisfied client....and on it goes. Good luck, and try to stay current on Social Media. They are a great way to advertise for next to nothing...usually just someone's time.
