As a seller of skin care products(by mail only) not a product leaves here without samples of our associated products. We get a lot of reorders that way. but standing on a street corner handing out samples is a waste. or leaving them at a salon.    (more) As a seller of skin care products(by mail only) not a product leaves here without samples of our associated products. We buy oils by the drum(4 drums at time) We have customers all over the world. I'm serious when I tell you we have customers even in mainland China. And soap isn't cheap to ship. 1. we sell other products so our soaps are giveaways with each item purchased. once people try our soap they want more. Whole families using our soap exclusively. So we do sell a lot of soap by itself too. 2. we make the best soap in the world. I've even had small soap makers tell me this. So if you think you have a winner just because you found it in a soap making book, think again. it took us a year to find the right formula and methodology. we've been doing this for 17 years. 3. Our soap are scent free and we don't put fancy packaging on them. we tell people they are ugly. sure you'll sell a few soaps by looks, but the key is getting them to use the soap and reorder, not put it on the back of the toilet because it looks good. This is why in my opinion most soap makers fail. 4. why scent free? why not? most essential oils do not make it through the curing process. Artificial fragrances in my mind are disgusting. They make me ill. They are derived from petroleum. nothing natural about them. 5. We super fat a lot more than other soap makers. 6. and we don't short the water. so our soaps take longer to cure. another reason they are better. hope this helps. good luck! Steve

I have to admit, it's a lot harder to start today than 17 years ago. to me it's all about the products. you have to find a niche. of course that's true of any business. I spent a full year studying what was on the market and how to make things that were better. far better. At first we tried hiring cosmetic chemists. but all they knew how to do was put together formulations big chemical companies laid out for them. there was no creativity. We buy only the finest ingredients. usually virgin or wild crafted. they are sometimes twice the price. highly processed oils are mostly robbed of their nutrients by heat. For example: the difference between virgin Rose hip oil and processed Rose hip oil is incredible. one is deep reddish gold, the processed one is clear. Same goes for Shea Butter. I was appalled at the awful ingredients big companies use(still today). unpronounceable chemical stews. all designed to have a long shelf life. and an attractive jar. what was inside they cared little about. except they included some label candy. Label candy are ingredients, usually extracts, in such small percentages as to not matter but made it seem like it was the magic ingredient. most of the ingredients involved silicones(dimethicones). water, some sort of cheap oil, and a thickener. I honest to God don't believe big companies even understand a true moisturizer does not use a thickener(xanthan, algin/seaweed,etc). A true moisturizer is a perfect blend of oils water and vegetable waxes at a specific temperature. figuring that percentage out is the secret. understanding pH, preservatives, dealing with containers, markups. there's no easy answer but trial and error. you can't spend $100,000 in google ads and expect to make money selling a $20 product. too many competitors. we spend zero on advertising. it's all word of mouth and reorders. and you can't stand on a corner giving out free samples. they never buy. most people who ask for samples never buy. we offer a no time limit guarantee. (Yes I've given refunds to someone who bought 5 years ago) our return rate runs so far under 1% that it is closer to zero than 1. consumers are smart, if they like a product they will buy it again and again. it's all just a matter of slowly growing a business. repeat business is what it is all about. thanks Steve
