We are a business law firm, so as you might imagine we have been talking to a lot of folks about how to survive this crisis. We are looking at two main opportunities: SBA loans and accessing business interruption insurance.
We are encouraging our clients to look into whether they can apply for the SBA loans in the CARES Act. There are some really valuable programs available to businesses, including forgivable loans (i.e., free money to pay your rent and your employees). Learn more on our blog and by subscribing to our newsletter.
Another opportunity people might not know about is accessing business interruption insurance. Because COVID-19 (or really any pandemic) is not a situation the insurance industry has experienced, insurance policies are not written with them in mind. And because insurance policies are often "all-risk except..." policies (meaning they cover all causes of loss unless the cause is excluded), some insurance professionals estimate that a huge percentage of outstanding business policies may have coverage for losses caused by, or related to, COVID-19.
So besides doing everything else (tele-commuting, etc), as business owners we should be looking closely at applying for whatever SBA loans we might qualify for, and also making an insurance claim for any losses you are suffering. You can expect your insurance company to take an aggressive posture and probably deny your claim, but you won't get paid unless you ask. (And of course, we're really good at "asking" :) ).
