We like to hire carpenters who actually enjoy their work, so one question we like to ask is why are you a carpenter?  The answer we like to hear is, "I take pride in my work and like to show the customer that I'm a true professional".  If I don't have to motivate an employee to do a good job due to the fact that they take pride in their work, this solves half the battle!
