What's something you wish you knew about starting a woman-owned business?
Answered by:
There's no question I've faced sexism my entire life, let alone my 31 year career in public health and fitness. My own father routinely mocks and dismisses women who start consulting businesses. Even as I recognized that hegemonic sexism, my greatest challenges of being self-employed is needing to learn sales and marketing in addition to leading in my field. Self employment is not for the thin skinned.

As a physician in my own practice I can totally relate.

Heather, I can totally relate. It is my challenged area as well. This is where partnerships come in as a valuable resource, or bartering services until you are able to outsource that skillset to an expert. It is the reason I created my finance and strategy service, as many are not savvy about managing that critical part of their businesses. I wanted to ensure that concrete finance support delivered with integrity was available to small businesses, so that owners could focus on their product or service offering that they are passionate about.
