People get busy. And many of them won't do it if it's not easy. It's best if you offer them the specific links that go straight to the review site, (give them the option of Yelp, Google or Facebook) with detailed instructions (will they have to log in? What if they don't have an account?) and...

It's best if you offer them the specific links that go straight to the review site, (give them the option of Yelp, Google or Facebook) with detailed instructions (will they have to log in? What if they don't have an account?) and follow up. We follow up just once if they don't leave a review, and ask them to fill out a customer satisfaction survey as an alternative. Then we have testimonials we can copy on our site or our brochures, even if it's not a review in Yelp or Google or Facebook.

Depends on how much you know about your customer and how specific the letter can be.Very personalized info should go in a letter, for privacy reasons.
But for a general mass-mailing, postcards have two advantages:
1) They don't have to be opened to be effective.
2) They can be very visually arresting.
Of course, every campaign should carefully consider three factors:
- The list - Who are you sending it to? The more specific, the better, down to the individual if you can, but small groups also work- like Cessna Citation owners that have owned their plane 6 years or more.
- The offer - What do you want them to do? Download a tip sheet? Watch a video? Make an appointment for a free consultation? The smaller, easier and more attractive the "ask," the better for a first contact.
-The presentation - Should this be a beautiful postcard? A cartoon? A letter with text on the outside? Something more official looking? A balsa-wood airplane? An express envelope? What serves the purpose best and is most likely to be opened by the type of person you're mailing to?

Start with a question rather than a pitch. "Tell me about what YOU do." And then LISTEN and be curious, don't just tee up and mentally rehearse your pitch. Then tailor the conversation in a direction he (or she) will be interested in. If you run out of time and don't get to your pitch, you can...

Then tailor the conversation in a direction he (or she) will be interested in. If you run out of time and don't get to your pitch, you can always say, "That's fascinating, (if it is) I'd like to talk about this some more later . . . "

Whenever posisble, meet clients or host groups for breakfast rather than lunch or dinner! You can host a nice breakfast for a fraction of the cost of a dinner.
