I don't think there is one thing that is a "holy grail" of advertising. Especially one metric that can be influenced by multiple factors. If "holy grail" did exist - it would be a solid system that looks comprehensively at the customer journey at each stage of the funnel, have a good feedback... The starting point seems to be the same for everyone. We really venture off outside of Google and FB, only if we saturated the volume and still have the budget.
