How We Got Started

When I was a teenager, I admired a friend's funky copper earrings. Upon finding out she made them, I immediately went shopping for pliers, copper wire and tiny wood beads. I made a few pairs similar to my friends, then started getting ideas for my own unique designs. I sold my earrings to friends and people on the street.

Fast forward to my life as a mom. I was tired of the 9 to 5 office job and stumbled on an opportunity to make beaded earrings from home for a company in California. I sent for their instructions, bought materials, and started teaching myself bead weaving. I got bored with the company's design so proceeded to start creating my own designs.

Soon people started asking if I sold my jewelry. So I started making jewelry for my friends and family. Then in 2008, I had an opportunity to consign my jewelry in a boutique and an art gallery. Soon thereafter, I opened my Etsy shop.

My future goal is to build my own website to sell my unique creations. Stay tuned.

I've had more visits to my Etsy shop but no sales. Since no one is going out, jewelry is not really much of a thought. I have a feeling those visiting my shop are other jewelry makers looking at my designs. Oh well, I am focusing on revamping some older designs. Ace Hardware MUST have an excellent consistent training program. I shop there not to get the best price but because I know I'll be greeted by a "helpful hardware man" (a little too gender specific but I'll forgive them) to help me find what I need or be the expert on solving a problem.  Also, they don't shadow you after they show you where the light bulbs are. So I try to emulate the helpful hardware man. And truly listen to what the customer says about what they're looking for. I agree with the folks here about not being the sales person that drives them nuts (and usually drives them out the door).

She addresses many issues for those looking to branch out on their own or just find a career more fitting for them. Just google her name or Marie TV. I've been a big fan for a long time and always learn something new from her. I currently design and make jewelry, selling it on social sites and Etsy (online). Outside sales is not an easy career. I don't do well at cold calling but was successful as a Sales Manager for an architectural sign company. We worked hard with architects to get our signs into specifications for commercial construction. Then the dealers would call us for estimates and order from us if they got the job. So it was more of a marketing and customer service type sales job. And the product was high quality so I felt proud being a part of the company.

She then holds up her hand and shows her friend a new ring on her finger and says, “Do you think 4 cts. is too gaudy of a stone?” And this favorite cartoon --

I've signed up for a course on getting higher views in Etsy searches. And I just found out about some back end tools in Facebook that I was unaware of. So I want to try a few targeted ads there. I am happiest when I am creating. I started with bead weaving which I picked up quickly because I'd been sewing since I was 11 years old. Then I discovered wire work and have been working to expand into other metal work. One of my favorite pieces are my hex nut bracelets, a proprietary weave that glimmers when done in stainless steel. It's more subtle (and expensive) in brass and oxidized black. I also offer it longer as an ankle bracelet. Plus put the anklet and bracelet together and you have a choker!
