As an introvert, I started with structured networking (Chamber of Commerce). This got me more comfortable, but I'd still be a mess at general meet and greets, except after years of structured networking, I now know many people at just about any local networking event. I find a "friend" and they introduce me to 1, 2, or more people. Then I find another friend, and repeat. Stick with it. Think long term. Go and do!
