If they are unresponsive, then you did what you could do to help them and they don't deserve you as a customer.

It depends if you view photography for your business as a marketing expense or an investment. You have to ask yourself the same question regarding your business. Did you carve your niche by lowest price or on quality. If your business is all about lowest cost low return with little regard for quality, by all means go for the lowest price, it makes sense. When you place an ad, do you look for the cheapest media, or media that your potential client uses which may not be the cheapest. Excellent photography can help your business achieve it's goals. Good photography can have a measurable positive impact on the bottom line. To Masha Zakharenkova comment that anyone with a decent camera can take a good photograph, she answered the question herself, as " so called photographers who managed to take really bad pictures even with good cameras". Nothing has changed in 100 years - anyone could buy a camera and make a photograph. What has changed? The cost of taking that photograph. The cost of buying and processing film (could be hundreds of dollars) and not knowing what they got kept the amateur out of the market. (Professionals always know exactly what is on the film.) Now, it's simply delete, delete, delete then spend time correcting in Photoshop what should have been done when shooting. Does all this really matter to the client? It should. As advertising icon David Ogilvy, once said, if we hire people smaller than us we become a company of midgets, if we hire people larger than us, we become a company of giants. What many clients don't understand is that a photograph creates a subliminal impression almost instantly. A poor photograph has a negative effect on the brand. Major brands wouldn't spend over $100,00 for a photographer to shoot if they know the person behind the camera is one of the most important components of the entire project. Remember, that photographer is likely using the same camera and lens as the cheap photographer. Is professional commercial photography dying? I'd say no. Actually, the opposite may be happening as more 'wanna be's' call themselves photographers. They really help me. They highlight the difference in quality photography, what I do and what I'm worth. The same was said of the graphic design industry in the late 1980's with the Mac SE, Adobe PageMaker and Quark Xpress design software. I can always alter my fees to accommodate the client, but high quality photography is something I always deliver. Ask the photographer if they can work within your budget, but most important for the photographer and your business, respect what the photographer can do for you. Sorry for the long reply, but it's a loaded question that raises more.

Try to support your local brick-and-mortar print business before online services. There are digital print houses in just about every city.
