Know your customer
That means what sort of clients are you looking for? Do you seek to cater to big weddings, corporate events, small dinner parties, bbq parties, cooking classes. High end catering for celebrities or mid range for family feasts? All have a different approach and different tone of voice. If you want to do get businesses to hire you, invest time and money in getting to know the right people. Like ceo's, managers, business owners and if you can get to know their partner. Families and tourists will seek out you, so make sure you are easy to find. To summarize this, Know your niche market
Networking
You might have read about it in other answers. And it is vital. But where and when do you network? Answer to that would be everywhere and all the time. Have a short 10 second answer to the question what you do for a living. Have a 20 second 'sales pitch' to explain more details of your business (when did you start, what is unique about your business, what is your passion). If you network with people, steer away from just talking about you and how great your company is. Rather ask questions about what they love to cook for instance (this is the subject that connects them to your business), just be interested in them, then they will be interested in you :).
What do you need
Enough writing, just a list know:
- Website; easy to read and understand, pictures and contact form
- Business cards; create one that explains in one sentence who you cater to
- Reviews; Essential this one! It gives credibility and trust. have some on your website, google, even yelp or tripadvisor.
- Grow your network; Alignable and Linkedin might help
- Social media; Use it as your resume, stories and pictures of your food
