I agree with Michael, with any type of franchisee or business at least you have some sort of normalcy and legitimacy. With independent contractors or business owners (like me!) I use godaddy for all of my hosting and mostly for Wordpress. If I work on something more in depth than Wordpress they have great pricing on shared servers as well.

A lot of new photographers will focus on price, if you are going to be around and actually make money and build a real business out of it, you are going to have to focus on quality and service. Your prices will be higher, but so will your service and quality and you wouldn't be going after the same clients as those who focus on cost. It is like going to Whole Foods Vs. Walmart.
If you are approaching another business cold, you should have a great idea in mind that will benefit both of you, but make sure you make it about them as much as you can. Let them know what you can do for them, how you can help their business, what are you going to do that they can't do for...

Let them know what you can do for them, how you can help their business, what are you going to do that they can't do for themselves?
When they tell you that they can't afford something like that, let them know that you will produce everything and get the prints done and what not, all they need to do is provide the clothing (if it is a clothing store) or toys (if it is a toy store) etc. and let you put a poster or two up on their walls or in their windows with their product in the images.
If they say they already have a photographer they work with, let them know that is great, and leave your card with them saying something like, "If you ever have the need for another photographer or they are not able to take on a project for you, please let us know!" etc.
I always make sure I meet with my clients to set up any appointments and go over pricing. I do not do pricing on the internet and I do not do pricing over the phone. I make sure all appointments are in person before the session and make sure they see what they are getting and to get a feel for...

As the others have said, one of the best known ones is Kickstarter and a lot of success there for many people if you take the time to really lay out your plan and give good incentives to fund you! Another one is GoFundMe.

I agree, no. If you get stuck in the price range of your discounts then everyone is going to expect to get your services for that price range. Not worth it in the long run in my opinion.

I watch videos on Creative Live and magazines always are a good source of new inspiration, but nothing beats practice. Find something you haven't tried yet in a magazine or in an image online and practice over and over again, then repeat!
