Quite the opposite with us. In the first week of the shutdown we hired three additional employees. Kept everyone on the payroll while training and renovating. Concluded second biggest sale in company history using Zoom. Just kept working hard; some in the office some remotely. As restrictions are...

Word of mouth through vendors you represent is always a good way to get the word out. A business broker with experience in your field would also be a good method.

Join the Chamber of Commerce and be active. Or, as others have suggested, join networking groups where you can work on your elevator pitch and discover new business contacts in a social setting. Push your brand in e-mails, blogs , social media. Ask for referrals from friends in business. Cold...

Push your brand in e-mails, blogs , social media. Ask for referrals from friends in business. Cold calling stinks, I don't care what anyone says. Knocking on doors is the toughest of all and telemarketing should be left to the professionals. But the ideas I and others have suggested will get you in "under the radar".
First of all, best wishes to you. Heed your doctor's advice because running a business is like life; it's a marathon not a sprint. All of us business founders /owners like to think we are irreplaceable. Well, were not.. unless we don't plan for it.

You need to hire someone to get you through this period. You also need to candidly notify your customers that you will be taking a medical leave. That is being proactive.
I put off a common medical condition for ten years by convincing myself that my company could not survive without me even for a short period. That resulted in almost seven hours of robotic surgery and an extended convalescence. My business survived just fine and fortunately so did I. Don't be me... take care of yourself !

Over the years we have tried everything from TV to radio to newsprint to billboards to trade shows to internet and on and on. It is all expensive and you wonder who is actually seeing it. When the economy was tight so was our ad budget. We created our own simple envelope stuffers that we sent in the mail with invoices or attached to business e-mails. We stressed our logo and brand on every communication. We worked our FaceBook page hard and at least 2x per week. We started LinkedIn and Twitter pages. We paid special attention to our web site and made sure it was updated and fresh. And we shared lots of articles that we thought might interest our customers. All of this was cheap or free and it worked better than the traditional advertising.
Joining your local Chamber of Commerce or a reputable networking group is a good start but once you are in, you really have to identify the vertical markets that you are best suited for and concentrate in those areas.

Cold calling. We are in a business that depends on outside sales. Our first customer was 42 miles away. I answered the phone one day and it was them placing a service request. I told them I had a tech in the area and we would respond in one hour. I then jumped in my car and drove the 42 miles to...

Cold calling. We are in a business that depends on outside sales. Our first customer was 42 miles away. I answered the phone one day and it was them placing a service request. I told them I had a tech in the area and we would respond in one hour. I then jumped in my car and drove the 42 miles to them and took care of their issue. They were none the wiser. Those are the kind of things you do as start up if you are serious about growing a business.
There are a lot reasons we lose contracts and some of them are totally out of our control. It's never easy but you have to move on. I would rather have a thousand small clients than 100 large ones. But you also have to candidly look at your own operation to see if you contributed to the loss and...

People need to know you exist and forums like this are valuable. You have to get noticed. Brand recognition is key. Whether it is you logo, a tag line you product or service or even your face. You have to be memorable. There is no substitute for face to face networking to build a comfort level.
