I agree, referrals are part of the gears that move business.  Online is a wonderful vehicle for networking in an ocean of the attention economy.  I also love real facetime when meeting the right person needing the service I offer. I've received some very robust projects simply by meeting people at events or being at the gym.  Having strong communication skills is a plus in making work happen.  A few years ago I saw window displays for Whole Foods Market in NYC ... thought they were awful.  I spoke to the manager and showed him why work.  Nothing happened.  3 months later I received a phone call to meet the marketing team and landed a photography project which then turned into two more assignments.. 2 in NY and 1 in London... all because I approached the right person and make a clear presentation of the value I  offer without being pushy.  My 3¢.   :-)
