About Us

2022 celebrates fifty-one wonderful years of my full-time career in fine art. My art is sold through select galleries, directly from my website and studio, in special events and through commission requests from patrons. Also I sell my popular prints to selected galleries-frame shops for their display and retail sales. If you are interested, contact me and tell me about your business.

Over the years I have found many superb subjects for my artistic creations. The world of New Orleans jazz musicians and the old club environs have been especially fun to work with and have brought an enthusiastic following world wide. Portrayals of the colorful life of New Orleans are engaging and a ball to sketch and paint; bringing that character and color to many homes, restaurants and offices. Since returning to my native Texas it has been exciting to delve into imaginative depictions of the vintage west and southwest. The romance of the Old West has such a wealth of imagery, it’s a feast for the artist. Jazz clubs, Old steamboats, characters of the old west, Creole cookery, pirates and other rogues… these are some of my celebrations of life in art. Distinctive portrait rendering is done by commission as is house portraiture.

The media most incorporated is a unique hybrid aqueous technique integrating finely detailed pen & ink line rendering with highly developed acrylic color-wash painting. Some are executed in a classic oil-type acrylic medium on canvas or art board. Drawings range from pencil sketch to an ink line rendering reminiscent of master etchings.

Commercial applications have had a good range of projects.
Years past I worked with architect Leon J. Impastato to render ‘before and after’ paintings of his wonderful French Quarter building renovations. A fun period found me creating designs and art for Hot Stamped Cups, Inc. used by Carnival Krewes such as Zulu and promotions such as Elizabeth Taylor's Passion Perfume. Thompson art has embellished magazine covers and articles, special posters and exclusive print editions, including Audubon Zoo, New Orleans Jazz & Food Festival, Mardi Gras Upriver, Denton Arts & Jazz Fest, San Antonio Jazz festival, Jazz on & Off the Wall Setauket NY, New Orleans A' la Carte, Vignette Magazine, Go Magazine, Book of U.S. Rivers, Stony Brook Museum, McDermott International, Tulane Medical Alumni and Bell Telephone among others.

How We Got Started

In 1971 I arrived in New Orleans to begin my fulltime career as a fine artist. Since my early youth painting and sketching, along with other creative media was a fascination. My art was selling and gained recognition for years and I had a successful period of graphic design and illustration both before and after moving to the French Quarter. I consider art a calling and know I have been blessed to pursue the creative life.

Meetings? I meet the neighbors' dogs usually early morning for dog biscuits on way to the studio, my cats around then too (that's the only traffic encountered on way to studio) and the studio squirrels may drop by anytime in the day but it only costs me peanuts. It was my first day on the "Square" and I came out early and no other artists were there...hahaha. So I got the sketch job. The exposure was the trick. Later Liberty Gallery on Royal St. sold my work for many years and many more people saw my work there. For me it is getting the art work ( my product) out in a good venue for that all important exposure. Now I also do festival venues where I can set up a tent and my attractive display. People love to meet, talk with and buy from the person who has created the art ( or whatever).

Some principles could apply to my art print sales. I have known many soap makers and other fun craft makers that sell at monthly ( some weekend) markets. Gruene Market Days is in New Braunfels, a long drive but a great monthly market. I have been wanting to try the weekly market in Grapevine, TX.... a lot closer. A crafts market usually draws people who like hand crafted soaps. I know this is not a direct answer to your question but it s another idea. I love helping arts & crafters. Let me add: people are more likely to buy and item when they have fun meeting the crafts person or artist and a periodic market puts subtle pressure to 'buy it when you can'.

Interesting question. Unfortunately it seems to me there is no way to tell until they make some action to actually buy. If that does not happen then chalk it up to "interest" in your art and hope it pays off later. Why do you think they would be interested in your prices if they are not... (more) Interesting question. Why do you think they would be interested in your prices if they are not interested in buying? Here's a thought... I am thinking about seeing what the up to date pricing is for art prints comparable to mine in my main market city. I haven't raised mine in a very long time and this market is a long day's drive from here. Perhaps they are trying to see what other artists are charging for similar items in this area. Hope my musings help. Please feel free to follow up with more thoughts/questions.

If it does, I have yet to find out how to take advantage of it. Perhaps people do stumble onto my website via facebook. But it's my artist website through whick questions, requests and purchases are made via the internet. (more) If it does, I have yet to find out how to take advantage of it. As an example, I just finished a show in my town that cost me only $30 for my booth show space ( 10'x10') and it was very profitable. Last year I did a show in Denton, Texas that cost me about $350 and did make money but not enough to do that show again. When you show in local or even distant festivals and art shows, you put your art before many new interested people... all potential buyers. It's a two-fer.... make mone and gain powerful exposure. Secondly, placing your art in high-traffic galleries is very good. I have sold in New Orleans French Quarter.... providing a constantly fresh audience for my fine art and limited edition prints. Thirdly the online exposure is good too. I have a website and have exposure through websites like Pinterest. Now on the first suggestion (festivals & Shows) , it takes time to search & evaluate shows, physical work to actually do the show, and the cost of a tent-walls-chair-table-etc... plus the booth fee and travel costs. But the payoff can be immediate.
