Does it pay off to join a local Chamber Of Commerce?

As you already know, the main purpose of any local chamber of commerce, is to protect and promote the local business community, with its primary goal of helping business owners expand their network.

So, before you consider spending that discretionary income on buying 100 lottery tickets, or tossing them on a club party, consider using that money to join a local chamber of commerce near you.

I/we’ve joined the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber (SSPC) and, IT WAS A GREAT DECISION. However, I would like to have your take, in terms of what was your personal experience in joining a local chamber …

Why I am asking/suggesting this (especially if you’re a small business)? Well, there are quite a few reasons, some of which I will mention below:

  • You’re provided with multiple networking opportunities, which could generate new connections,
  • While exchanging ideas, referrals, and recommendations, you’ll foster & boost your credentials,
  • It will increase your exposure and relevancy, especially if you’re looking for a B2B environment,
  • As a member, you will get discounts on everything from office supplies, to continuing education,
  • You may get certain email lists, as well as first dibs on booths at trade shows and other events.

*Certainly, there are many other benefits than the ones mentioned above, but I just mentioned a few …

** If you are willing to invest some of your money into the stock of ”Opportunity,” rather than that of “Security” then, … joining a Chamber of Commerce is definitely worth your money and time invested …

*** According to a study conducted by the Schapiro Group, 49% of consumers were more likely to think favorably of a local business, if it was a member of the local Chamber, and 80% were more likely to purchase a product or service from a Chamber member.

Dan, as a service business without a brick and mortar location in a specific community I have had mixed results at multiple chambers.

Chambers definitely offer multiple opportunities to meet some great local businesses, expand your professional network and learn from more seasoned business owners but in my experience, they are more focused on helping and promoting businesses with physical locations. Events are designed to draw shoppers into community to the benefit of those brick and mortars while offering the services businesses only the privilege of sponsoring the events.  The same with celebrations of grand opening, other businesses milestones and even the networking events themselves

What I’ve observed at the networking events is that they are dominated by other service businesses with little participation from the restaurants, retails and other brick and mortar businesses, other than the hosting location, that the service businesses are hoping to connect because the bricks and mortars are rightfully running their businesses during the events. Therefore, it allow the services business to form strong relationships but they are still left out of being able to build the same level of relationship with the bricks and mortars.

Despite my personal experience, I am a supporter of Chambers of Commerce because I believe they are good for  local communities. However, service businesses need to go in with eyes wide open and realistic expectations about what the chamber will be able to do for them.

As a marketing person here is my take on why the chamber is a fantastic digital marketing investment.    Lets say the membership is $250 and with that you get a trusted business profile and get featured on the chambers site and social media.   Here is where the big pay off is ....  do a ribbon cutting using the digitalift trust and credibility system.   Each ribbon cutting has city, county, state officals, leaders from the chambers and your personal advocates.   Your marketing objectives are to get, recommendations, pictures , video testimonials,  social media and REVIEWS!!!.   With the Digitalift system 5-10 reviews are expected and that alone will improve all of your online marketing efforts for years to come.

Historically, I have ALWAYS been active in a chamber and/or related association throughout my career and have formed deep and lasting relationships as a result.  I have enjoyed experiences that I would have never had otherwise.  Without hesitation, I vote YES!  As with most things in life, though, you get out what you put in.  I have served as Ambassador, been involved, attended trade shows and presentations, and helped others to meet key people.  Good luck!

I would look at any organization thinking to 2 aspects:

1. How much can I contribute and serve my purpose?

2. Return on investment of subscription and extra costs in terms of time dedicated to the activities.

networking and organization have to be evaluated on the overall portfolio you are looking for.

Are you part of any other organization?

Thank you

Katia

Thank you for your input, which I really appreciate. My opinion is that "joining a local chamber" should not be considered as an "exclusive" venue of expanding your network of connections, but ... rather as a complemementary alternative. Besides, don't expect to pay your membership, and have the individual or small businesses "flood you" with business requests. It just doesn't work that way. If you do what you should, meaning ... get prepared to properly represent your business in 2 minutes or less, and follow up on these connections, it will pay off. At least that was/is my experience, so far. People want to connect. Besides, one should have an open-minded approach when establishing new connections, as there are 2 types of benefits (direct & indirect) derrived from a business connection, which are mutually beneficial: 1) First, you get to know each other, and get familiar with the product(s) and/or service(s) that each other has to offer. If any of the two get excited about it, you may be doing business in a Direct manner. 2) However, even if you don't purchase the product or services that each other has to offer, you still leraned quite a few things about each other, which will enable both parts to be mutually beneficial to each other (Indirect benefit), by posting Remmendations on Social Media platforms, and/or, referring the existing base of already clients to each other, if there is a "good match" that will benefit the client ... *** In my opinion, it's a winn-winn situation, where the resources invested is 1 or 2 hours of your time. However, this method should be "complementary" to one's overall efforts, not "exclusive" ...
YES!...The Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce has been helping build better business in five (5) local communities since 1961 including Shelby, Utica, Clinton Township, Macomb Township and Sterling Heights! Chamber membership has significant benefits including advertising reach, networking events, social media exposure and a host of other benefits. Call me to find out all the chamber has to offer including a 68% bump in reputation with 73% of consumers becoming more aware of your business. The SHRCCI has been essential for years to the growth and revitalization of our local business communities while membership dues is nominal.
You're asking the right group.... The answer is of course and how much do you want to grow your business? Joining a Chamber of Commerce will only help you get out of it from what you're willing to put in it. Not all networking groups operate in the same style. When considering if you should join, always visit one of the preferred events first. First impressions say a lot. Next, ask questions. A properly run Chamber should be organized and offer an orientation that will address basic questions and set your expectations. Finally, talk to members. Get to know their opinions and see why they are members.
In my opinion? Absolutely. With the many benefits and services offered, they will exceed what you pay in membership fees over and over again. Advertising and Marketing alone, which is a HUGE benefit for businesses is one of the primary reasons to join a Chamber. If you're lucky to have an active Chamber of Commerce in your community, be sure to attend as many of the events as possible and network with other Chamber members. We support each other in one another's businesses. It Pays to be a Chamber Member. :)
