Does it pay off to join a local Chamber Of Commerce?

As you already know, the main purpose of any local chamber of commerce, is to protect and promote the local business community, with its primary goal of helping business owners expand their network.

So, before you consider spending that discretionary income on buying 100 lottery tickets, or tossing them on a club party, consider using that money to join a local chamber of commerce near you.

I/we’ve joined the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber (SSPC) and, IT WAS A GREAT DECISION. However, I would like to have your take, in terms of what was your personal experience in joining a local chamber …

Why I am asking/suggesting this (especially if you’re a small business)? Well, there are quite a few reasons, some of which I will mention below:

  • You’re provided with multiple networking opportunities, which could generate new connections,
  • While exchanging ideas, referrals, and recommendations, you’ll foster & boost your credentials,
  • It will increase your exposure and relevancy, especially if you’re looking for a B2B environment,
  • As a member, you will get discounts on everything from office supplies, to continuing education,
  • You may get certain email lists, as well as first dibs on booths at trade shows and other events.

*Certainly, there are many other benefits than the ones mentioned above, but I just mentioned a few …

** If you are willing to invest some of your money into the stock of ”Opportunity,” rather than that of “Security” then, … joining a Chamber of Commerce is definitely worth your money and time invested …

*** According to a study conducted by the Schapiro Group, 49% of consumers were more likely to think favorably of a local business, if it was a member of the local Chamber, and 80% were more likely to purchase a product or service from a Chamber member.

A Chamber can be your best business friend or your worst. It depends  on what you do with that membership. First you must take a close look at the members, leaders and events as well as the cost and benefit. Make sure it’s an active chamber.  Contact people in the chamber listed in the directory. Ask them how their experience has been and if they attend events. If they don’t attend, they can’t really tell you anything.
Ask if you can meet someone at the next event to help break the ice. Meet and greet! Don’t sell your business or service, sell you. Be active, show up at different events. Mix it up, some morning, some afternoon and some evening. You’ll see a wider selection of members.
I’ve always believed in the chamber. When I moved to FL 2 years ago, one of my first business investments was joining a chamber. Not only have my 2 chambers helped me become more integrated in the communities, but has well proven to be a positive ROI.  And no, I’m not the only travel professional, but I’m one of the only ones who actually shows up!

Absolutely! Research shows that business membership in the local chamber is an effective business strategy, enhances their reputation and trustworthiness in the eyes of customers, and generates many many opportunities to network and promote business.

In my opinion not really, Chamber of Commerce were developed to assist businesses with growth and exposure as well as a way to help them find affordable services for themselves, i.e. Health Insurance, P&C Insurance etc.  Truthfully they do none of this very well anymore and most clients place no thought if you are a chamber member.  You may be better served by affiliating with the better business bureau.  Just my thoughts and opinion.

It pays off even more to join a Regional Chamber because we offer local, regional, and international connections; become your business advocates; gives your company/organization more credibility and brings more opportunities; gain business intelligence that could impact your business; exposed to opportunities and events including monthly Mixers for networking; involvement with potential consumers and other business owners; allows you to market your business; opportunity to sit on a committee to benefit your business; finally, an opportunity to give back to your community by sponsoring events that give your business higher visibility.

The main factor to joining any group is your current professional status and business life cycle.

Where are you at in your business life cycle. Are you wanting to grow your business OR are you on the way out...ready for retirement or whatever... Having said that, factor in the amount of capital and personal time you will invest to grow your using this vehicle. Remember this action will need to be taken into account as part of your exit strategy. Is it worth your time and energy to follow through with the investment.
