Easy, we treat our customers like we would like to be treated in the same situation. That mindset has been our key to success. Also key is extremely fast response time on emails, almost instantaneous if possible.
Honesty is always the best policy. We only speak the truth about what is going on, and how we can help. Unfortunately that sometimes means the customer does not get what they want, or expected, and there is no real way to control that. Most clients appreciate our honesty and our efforts. We treat everyone the same--we are all important. Customers and staff.
If you're with a customer acknowledge the incoming guest two steps in the door.
If you know their name use it when greeting them. Work on remembering your customer's names.
Remember to treat them with courtesy like they are a guest coming into your home. if you had a guest at your house, you wouldn't ignore the new arriving guest until the first one left.
If it's hot, offer them a cold beverage, if it's cold offer them a hot beverage. I once arrived at a car lot on a summer day and was greeted by the salesman offering me an icy cold bottle of water. I ended up buying a car from him.
No matter how small or large the transaction make the customer feel special.
If someone is lost and stops in your store. Help them find where they're going via Google maps or look up the phone number so they can call for directions. Remember they might come back and become a customer because you were so helpful with no strings attached.

Customer Service, Customer Service, Customer Service. It's not about you, it's about how you make their experience. Exceed their expectations and do it while being humble. They will return over again and again.
This is something I tell my associate daily. Leave personal baggage at home and come to work ready to blow peoples minds. It's not personal for you, but make it personal for them. Make them feel like you gave them a personal experience that they would not get in another store. Remember, you may not be the only location that has your product, or service. Give them a reason to return to you again and again
In this day and age, there isn't a lot of respect going around so we treat everyone with that old fashioned respect we were taught. We really listen to what a client says and end up listening more instead of talking and telling them what we think. Many clients will end up opening up and talking about everything when they feel they trust you and you understand them and their needs. Many of our clients end up being great friends beyond just a business relationship. Respect, empathy and treating them as we would like to be treated, isn't that just the old golden rule? Let's all get back to that simple time again in our everyday life and business.
I don't have a store but I think this would apply to business owners anywhere: I listen to the customer in order to grasp what he or she needs. It sounds very simple but could be overlooked if one is not careful. Then I produce that very result. Where possible, I also go the extra mile to deliver additional related services or bonuses so that the customer feels completely satisfied and has in his/her possession a product they can be really proud of. It's satisfying for everyone, all-round!
We great our clients when they come to the Bradco Kitchen Cabinet Showroom. We start a casual conversation them ask about their needs and budget but also like to give them the space they need. I think how you aproach your clients depends very much what business you have. In my business my clients appreciate guidance and the professional knowledge we can share with them. My clients mostly want me to suggest them the right product considering their budget and livestyle. We never try to be pushy and that works well for us.
I am not brick and mortar so people don't walk in and look around. They usually come to me when they need a solution that I can provide. The key to customer retention for me is engagement and personal service.

60% of new customers do not come back after the first visit. Why? Poor Engagement
80% of those customers will return if offered and incentive.
You must have good engagement with your customers and continue to give them a reason to come back and visit your business.
