Customer service is and always should be of primary importance. However, please keep this in mind..the customer is NOT always right. You have no obligation to be bullied or harassed and never be afraid to say, I do not believe we will be able to meet your expectations, offer whatever needs to be offered, and walk the customer. Increasingly, we see people who are rude, crude and generally socially unacceptable. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Do your absolute best, but do not allow yourself or your employees to be bullied. And also remember, there are people who complain just beacuae they can and get some sort of freebie. It's a minefield out there.

I see so many businesses that are losing business due to bad service. In our business, customer service is the most important thing to survive. It is also important because you build a strong community reputation and others will refer and find you. Even though I do not have any employees, if I did there would be no cell phones or social media allowed while I am paying your wages.
At The Jewelry Factory our commitment is to responding to all inquiries & client contacts & questions as quickly as possible, even if it's not 'convenient' for us. Today clients send in requests for quotations for some of our jewelry work at all hours of the day & nite, by having a responsive system, we're able to do our best to be sure every request is responded to quickly. People in general used to have patience, but our need for immediacy has taken over.
Customer Service is absolutely Number One in importance. Of course, my four-legged furry clients can only tell the people they live with so much, so I have to stay in touch with two-footed clients as well to have the full circle of customer service work. And it does help if my so-called "smart phone" decides to be smart and passes text messages to me from clients (sometimes it doesn't, and I'm lucky they're understanding about this).
If you have customers that have a choice, and you want them to choose you, then you must serve them well.
