I need a photo for LinkedIn. Do I need to have a professional do it, or is it ok to just use my own camera?

You can use your own camera if you are happy with the photo. If you want to save money, go to the Wal Mart photo center or equivalent (Sears, Penney's, etc.). For $25 you will get some good photos with a nice background done by someone who does them all day long.

If you want a GREAT photo, find a professional photographer in your area. I have done literally tens of thousands of portraits over the years and can testify to the value of spending a few extra dollars. Do you need a great photo? Probably not. However, I recommend this extra expense for people who would put it in their professional literature - real estate agents, for example, professional salespeople, perhaps an attorney.

Considering the quality of the cameras on the phones these days....your phone should be sufficient. You may want to have someone take the photo for you.

a professional head shot is more appropriae.

I don't think you need to have the pic professionally done, but by the same token, it does need to be as professional as you can with your own camera. I normally won't connect with people who only put up a logo. I want to see who I'm doing business with.

That is totally a question that only you can answer.  Professional photos are expensive.  If you have money to promote yourself with these photos, be mindful that you may use them for several other social media sites.   I used a photo that was taken of me by someone who was not a professional.  It was a good picture and so I used it.  I now need to update it as it was taken years ago. …

I used my own camera and still didn't unduly frighten anyone!

Either is fine. Good luck!

LinkedIn actually has a head-shot photo booth, saw one in Louisiana airport going to New York. So I would do a search for their photo booth locations.

A lot of people use a selfie. You can make that look professional. Just throw on a blazer, do your hair and makeup, find a plain background and whala!
