Tracking clicks on digital platforms is justifiably intoxicating for many people. From your point of view, is the ability to track clicks the holy grail of advertising?
No. After 10 years of digital marketing the customer is not overly concerned about clicks anymore if the phone is not ringing or the viewer is not following through. It also mean the message is not getting across to the viewer and they are going somewhere else or the product or service offered is not wanted or needed at that time. What good is a thousand clicks if it does not turn over? Unless it's a drip campaign or funnel, no good.
Tracking clicks is NOT the Holy Grail of advertising. Branding your business is very important as well as getting people to know, like, and trust you. There are many ways to do this and not just one way is going to do the job. Blogging is important. Putting your blood, sweat and tears into your business is important plus hard work.
2% is considered a successful clickthrough rate. Is there any other medium out there where you would not fire your agency if 98% of your media buy was a waste?
It really depends on what you are trying to do with your digital advertising. But you have to remember that digital isn't a "set it and forget it" proposition. You have to constantly keep an eye on it and keep fine tuning it to make it effective.
I don't think there is one thing that is a "holy grail" of advertising. Especially one metric that can be influenced by multiple factors.
If "holy grail" did exist - it would be a solid system that looks comprehensively at the customer journey at each stage of the funnel, have a good feedback system for tests and has a clear ROI.

No, the clicks don't show that someone has read the information or that it will guarantee new clients. To prove ROI comes from bean counters who didn't want to spend money which seems to be old school thinking. I struggle with companies only marketing online. Look at NIKE, regardless of whether you like the product or not, their branding advertising was huge on all mediums and they are a now household name which they back up with the quality of product.
No, the only thing that means anything is the click that turn into clients, purchases or are information (where you can get potential information) Remember the TV commerical with the baby that keeps clicking the ad for encyclopedias? If not google it, it tells the true story of clicks
Just because people click on your links, doesn't mean they are going to buy from you. You should keep sharing your content whether you get likes or not. You could reach out to them and see if you can help them..
It depends on what your ultimate goal is. If your goal is to get readers to click through to read more, then obviously click-through rate is important. If the click is a gateway to the ultimate action you want them to make (buy, register, contact, donate, etc.) then it is merely one metric worth watching.
Clicks are a good barometer of interest at least in the topic, or sometimes its just that they like the ad and how it looks. A couple other things can tell you more, what's your "bounce rate", on the ad? Do they click and then only stay 5-10 seconds, not very good conversions.
Secondly if you don't retarget or remarket to them with a pixel and follow up your Ad, the click is virtually worthless. If you have a prospect with a bonafide interest that clicks and especially for a local business, you MUST invest in remarketing Ads, either display or Facebook to close the sale. 90% of the folks that visit your site won't purchase or come into your store after only one visit, but statistics show that in excess of 30% that are remarketed to will. Remarketing or Retargeting.... now that might be the "Holy Grail" of conversion.

Clicks are great but tracking conversions is always better. We use a company called www.callrail.com to track phone calls and form fills on a website
