I have been attempting to write my book on a round the world adventure trek that I did by the seat of my pants, with a plan that only came together moment by moment in 1984/85.
Trouble is, I have only gone as far as an outline.
I have a clear vision of how I want the story to go and and the format of what I want for it to express.
I just keep getting blocked when I begin to transfer it from outline to written story.
I have been a creative person my entire life. I am a traditional Architect and a Visual-Artist (Painting) but I never experienced the freedom of expression I feel when I write. I began writing years ago to alleviate the frustration I felt when trying to articulate my thoughts or ideas to people who weren't listening, but waiting to talk. I have something to say and a way to say it that I believe will make people think.
I have finished writing and am editing for the second time the first of several books I have in my head (fiction novel, one of a trilogy) but I have no idea how to make it a reality. I've talked to many self-publishing houses and vanity presses but am completely lost when it comes to what to do when I've finished editing the first and begun writing the second and third book in earnest. To answer your question; I have found the time & place to write and have decades of subject matter to write about but I need guidance through the publishing process. I'm sure it will get easier but at the moment, writing isn't the issue, publishing is.
good advise, I have written two books and about the publish the third, You need to write not just think ahout it. The blog is a good idea, I started by writing stories about my life. I published them in my own e-zine and then worked my way up to a freelance writer. I took online writing courses as well.
The beginning is to write about anything and everything
You need to be self disciplined
You need to set time aside in a routine
You need to decide what you want to write about and to have an idea of what you are going to write about in each chapter You will be modifying the tentative chapters as your starts to take shape.
You need to research different styles of writing, for example there is a formula for romance novels, mystery novels etc. Creative writing is a style very different from business writing etc.
You need good editors to review your books and prepared to accept that your book will go through several reviews before it is ready. You need to swallow your pride and although you want too write in your own voice you have to accept that you are not Shakespeare and others may have valuable critics about your work and how to improve it.
there are so many other things to consider I will actual start a writing group at our local center in the spring where I will be teaching the basics
sorry for the errors, thank God I have editors for my books lol

I'd like to add another. Often it's not that we don't know WHAT to do. But there are other barriers to putting ourselves out there that show up like "I don't know how."
Fear of failure, the discomfort of transparency, believing there is a 'right' way. These and so many other mindsets can be the death knell of so many creative projects.
My work as an executive life and leadership coach digs into who you are 'being' around your project and has you accessing your passion and purpose to drive the results you seek.
This is what I do as a writing coach. We put together a plan including long-term goals, short-term goals and action steps. And it depends on which genre your book will be and what your writing skills are. Also, if you've blogged for at least a year, you have enough content for a book. I did not get a chance to go to all six classes because I had to fly out of the country and she wouldn't allow makeup classes I wish I had someone to help me with my book, and understudy writer or someone to encourage me more or real professional person who would be interested in my book and help me(*.*)
Get up early in the morning--30 minutes before your usual rising time and WRITE. EVERY DAY. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be on paper or computer. And Judy Wright is right: Blog. A blog creates a following and a following is what publishers want in their writers these days.
The bottom line is just do it: the exercise of bottom in chair is the only thing that really gets it done.
For me the first important thing was to have a basis for a story, which for me was a powerful dream I'd had that I couldn't shake, and some actual related life experience.
The other part was to set aside a time and a goal. My goal was ten pages per week and I usually wrote more, since you don't want to stop at ten pages when you're engrossed in it.
I also blogged a chapter a week, which kept up the momentum, garnered some great encouragement and tips and helped a publisher find me. Not sure if I'd do it that way again, but it worked for my first novel.

Thanks for asking Auntie Artichoke about writing a book. This is something I know a lot about, as an author of over 23 books.
Write a blog first. Write 10-15 blog posts of 500 words all on the subject where you are already considered to be an expert.
Now gather those blog posts into a organized sequence and give to a writer friend to add "bridges" at the end of each one leading to the next.
Look up CreateSpace or Kindle and follow their format. Publish and you are an author.
The more you write, the better you get. Do not plan on making money (you probably won't) but do have a burning in your gut to share a message.
Good luck,
Judy Helm Wright
