After 40+ years of building for people I remember this. We were adding to a house on the big island around 1986. The small country A frame was overflowing with a young couple, 3 small daughters and a dog. We installed joists with little girls and the dog's nose poking out of the screen door...

After 40+ years of building for people I remember this. We were adding to a house on the big island around 1986. The small country A frame was overflowing with a young couple, 3 small daughters and a dog. We installed joists with little girls and the dog's nose poking out of the screen door watching lumber move and nails getting pounded for a couple of days. When the second sheet of plywood went down, creating an 8x8 foot floor deck, the door pushed open and the dog came out first, sniffing the perimeter and looking over the edge. Then came a tricycle rider making a loop before we shoved her back into the house. A small moment, but the feeling of creating much needed housing together with being appreciated was really good.
At the onset of my business, I wish I knew that things will only work when you get the right people around you.

Know that you cannot easily or sometimes ever change other people. Step up the professionalism and take their direction, however unreasonable with responsiveness, accountability, and respect - stay on high ground. Take good notes, keep track of contradictions and tough direction and bring up in real meetings at the table. Let them know that you value the job, but certain things cause you to consider your options. Take interest in their plight - How does it feel to have to manage your child? What was it like when you started this business? What is your vision for the company - 1,2,5 year plan? Learn the 4 agreements for a better life: Be impeccable with your word. I would certainly promote competitors. Many peer contractors are friends of mine. There is too much work to be done for any of us. Reciprocal good faith among competitors is a good practice and represents our Hawaiian spirit of Aloha in business.

I am more inclined to take interest if there is no pressure and the caller respects my time.
