The most important part about starting a new business is the  potential clients  in your target market knowing you are there. smile. What service do you offer that sets you apart from the other travel agents? Do you go to their homes to meet with them? Have you got a video of you on vacation in a place you are promoting? Are you specialized in a part of the globe? What do you do that is special? Once you have got that settled, I suggest you put together a presentation you can offer to groups such as libraries, Rotary and other service clubs, clubs and organizations... they are all looking for interesting speakers.  I will share what I am doing writing my book Inside the Healing Journey.. a transparent candid how to manual of how I overcame.... that is my story ... what I know... and I am working it into a book, a workbook, a website linked into related products.  Perhaps you could work your story of being homeless into a presentation about how in spite of being homeless  you had so much experience travelling... perhaps travelling on a shoestring...  If you do not want to present your story you could just do presentations of some of your favourite places and why they are your favourite.  I don't know if you have a website but that is a must.. perhaps embedded with videos of locations you are writing about... and lots of photos. And an excellent business card you can hand out while you are developing the fine art of networking with your target market.  and more I am an idea person. email me. regards, marilynn

I was a 34 year old mother of three, recently remarried, a high profile personality on the fast track of business in London, Ontario and about to launch my own business as a speaker/trainer. My first gig was booked when suddenly, as is the case with ovarian cancer... the disease that whispers... I was literally deathly ill. At this point there was no choice about whether or not I could share what was going on with my working peers or friends. I am fiercely independent, a giver and prefer not to be a taker BUT it was my friends and business associates who got me through the immediate surgery and then radiation treatments. They encouraged me with their love and friendship, kept my mind off the elephant in the room, especially during the subsequent metastases first to the lung. It was my friends, church and business associates who stood with me when  which I turned down traditional treatment and chose divine and alternative treatments specifically barley grass. We were a community fighting this thing through love and prayer as I continued going to college, working on the side, and continuing my work giving back to the community as a writer/ journalist, speaker/trainer/encourager and ultimately a community investment specialist. When I was just about to sighn the papers for a new business with two business partners I was diagnosed suddenly with a brain tumour the size of your fist sitting on my brain stem. So much for the business and my life as I went through emergency surgery and full head radiation that left me so brain damaged my oncology neurologist calls me his miracle patient... he has never seen anyone come back from such severe brain trauma. But again it was my friends and business associates and specifically my church who prayed me through it. If I had sat there... as damaged as I was... without reaching out to my friends... I probably would have died of loneliness. The interesting thing about the damaged brain is that the patient may be able to do some things so well... I took a writing course and am a professional writer... while I couldn't figure out how to find the handle to the door and still get lost in a paper bag.  Two more brain tumours two years later acerbated the situation and when I "felt" as if I was down for the count the church gave me an all night prayer vigil and that broke it. Along with the radical healthy diet, assorted healing teas, and my own brain therapy and a radical belief in a God who heals WE broke cancer. And although it tried to come back two years later as a second primary in bladder and I still had to face that steep slippery mudslide of extreme brain damage... I am almost at the top and out of that... and for that for me silence is golden... if I hadn't shared with friends and business associates when my family couldn't handle it, I doubt I would be here. Just as it takes a community to raise a child, it takes a community to get a family member, friend or business associate through a diagnosis of a life threatening, debilitating or chronic disease.  Ironically this month I am finally completing my transparent and candid book Inside the Healing Journey a how to type book of how, not that, I got through. With a three per cent expectation of survival... I AM an overcomer... and a zero per cent expectation of recovery... I AM an overcomer... I have earned the right to share my victory story. I suggest Silence is Golden discernibly shares her story and give them... she is a giver... give them the opportunity to be part of the solution so she does not have to get through the problem alone. They will love on her and probably, as in my case, be a source of important healing information. much hope and love, warmest regards,        marilynn vanderstaay              a medical anomaly and a miracle in motion

(more) Hello Caitlin, Thank you for your very Christmasy email. For the most part I am foregoing Christmas this year in favour of completing my book Inside the Healing Journey.  Having said that I find myself surrounded today with Christmas table centre pieces and a herd of Candy Cane reindeer I am creating for my niece Donna, owner of the Gryphon Tea House on Monkland who hosted the most wonderful  drop in birthday party for me last week. A very memorable celebration of being 65, Just lovely bowls filled with Christmas balls, a couple of smiling reindeer and a sprig of Christmas fir. Too much fun. And I am creating the invitation to my second annual  Marilynn's Extended Family Christmas Celebration Dinner that will be held on Christmas Day this year at Tao Restaurant, Monkland and Decarie. Seating is limited so anyone interested in being part of the family... professionals who do not have family and friends to spend the day with....should contact me for more information. friendsfoodandfun@regardsmarilynn.com  For the rest I hope all of you in the Alignable family  enjoy the reason for the season with too much love, too many friends and family, too much wonderful food, and too much anticipation for a wonderful 2019!  warnest regards,          as always,                 marilynn

The best method is to host if possible an event at your business and send out a press release and a media invitation. If that is not possible, but you are starting a new service or aspect to your business write it all in  a press release. Make certain it is well written and interesting and includes all the pertinent information. For me as a journalist the best press releases have allllll the information so I can just write the article. If possible include your logo in a jpeg and any relevant photos also in jpeg format. That is how I work when I write Around Westmount. You can also write and post your own article/press release with your logo and relevant photos on social media. The important thing is that you get your information out there. I hope that helps. warmest regards, marilynn

I am writing to deadline this week for my last issue to be posted December 18. The good news is anything that wasn't pertinent to the holidays I could hold back into the new year. So unlike other media that scrambles for text in January when there is nothing going on, I already have my two issues filled. regard, marilynn
