Do you know how to check the standing of your website and the traffic that it's bringing in?

I just signed on a new web design client and for the umpteenth time learned that, like so many entrepreneurs, she has no idea whether her existing website is performing well or doing her any good, though it's been up for years. If you're like her, please let me know. I'd like to get a better idea of how many smart business owners are out there who are at a disadvantage by not knowing how to check their site's performance. I'd be happy to offer a free 15-minute phone tutorial to show them how. No obligation.

To check the measurements of a websites authority. I recommend using a Google chrome extension from Moz. Every website owner should know their page authority, domain authority and spam percentages. Then get the coding from Google Analytics and input it onto your website. Also create a Google Search Console account to have your site verified and to review additional data. Good luck small business owners! If you need additional instructions or advice reach out to me. I’m here to help.
I get the impression that your client must be a local service company of some type and that they do not have the website set up actually sell anything online & I would have to guess that there is no contact form either.  If this is the case I would:
1- Use the Free Google Forms service to design a very simple contact form that your site visitors can use to ask a question, ask for you to call them etc. When you receive a response, you will know that it came from your website.
2- Go to Google Voice and set a free Phone Number and then publish that number on your website. You can have the calls forwarded to your business phone, cell phone or even your laptop - Or you can have the caller sent directly to voice mail and receive notification email that you  either just missed a call from xxx-xxx-xxxx or that you have a new voice mail or even a new text message.  you will know when your website generates a lead.

Now, not only will know how your site is performing, but you will have received the information required for you to follow up and actually Sell Something!

Any analytics app "worth its' weight in salt" can give you the raw stats as to who, and from where, your visitors are, and are coming from, but the proper setup of the app and analysis is hard for most business website owners (particularly small business owners) to understand. Is your traffic direct (from someone typing in your URL), referred (from an authority site or by links from another site), from social campaigns or links on your social pages, from an organic search, or where? Add to that is an understanding of the above for each page, knowing which page was visited, when did they browse your site, and how long  (bounce rate) did they stay on the page(s), are they new visitors or returning visitors, and last but not least: are you the most frequent visitor?

Just adding an analytics plugin or script to your index page is not enough. Determine which page(s) has relevant information to the visitor and set it up to capture the visitor data.

You have to "deep-dive" into the data and adjust your marketing to that data. Of course, that can be somewhat akin to chasing the end of a rainbow.

That said, one app is not enough. One "solution" is insufficient. And, let's be honest, do you want to run your business or scour online data?

The best bet is to get a snapshot first of what's happening, then find someone to go through the data so you can focus your marketing efforts on capturing your visitors attention, engaging them in the sales process, and converting them to customers.
Yup!  Firstly, please, please claim your listing.  go to google maps and it will say if the listing is claimed.  It's free, do it!!  Another tip is Please, Please make your website secure.  When you click on a link and are directed to a website, lots of them say this is not a secure website,  Just saying, most folks will not continue to view that site,  Again, please make sure your website provider has secured your website, simple as a certificate.  Please feel free to contact me for more free advice as I am a firm believer in growing small businesses.

As a web host/designer since 1996,  before google, I am constantly looking for client friendly feedback from their site.  It makes my work easier.  New on the block is Google site kit...

Site Kit is the one-stop solution to deploy, manage, and get insights from critical Google tools to make the site successful on the web. It provides authoritative, up-to-date insights from multiple Google products directly on the WordPress dashboard for easy access, all for free.

There are many tools to help clients check the standing of their web traffic. Yes, Google Analytics is the first step. But, it's important to set up goals in analytics, to determine what's most important, conversions (forms filled out, a specific landing page reached, etc.). In addition, it's important to have a good SEO strategy, to increase traffic and build their domain authority. The 4 pillars of SEO are: design, on-page seo, off-page SEO and content building. Let us know if you need help.
The first thing I ask for when looking to learn about a client's current Marketing is their Website Analytics.
Wow if you would record that telephone tutorial I'd be happy to run it as a podcast on our blog!

Sure there is counter you can have built in. You then compare to the number of actual calls or responses to web site.
