How do you feel about hiring workers overseas to help in your business?

Some business owners prefer to outsource work overseas to the Philippians, India, etc, for many reasons.

What do you think about this?

I hire only in the USA. I support our Country and the people here.
I hired a team of developers overseas to help with the software I'm developing. They couldn't be more helpful. I am now able to put more capital toward other things, which is crucial when starting a business.

The only downside is that we are 12 hours apart, so we only work together for 2 hours a day.
When you hire overseas workers you will have an extra burden of drafting enforceable employment contracts and translating them into the languages of your foreign-language-speaking in-country employees.  In addition, if you decide to downsize your foreign workforce, you will need legal translation services again in order to communicate employment changes in the languages of your in-country workforce. Depends on what you want tasks you want them to preform.  Things like coding and such, they can be helpful and less expensive.  Many stateside e-commerce providers outsource to those countries with positive results.  If you're trying to market/brand-build your business, I would suggest working with someone who is more acquainted with your domestic culture.
We always start with a hire local objective. However, we've experienced several situations where there were no local providers or where a client's financial situation mandated an overseas alternative.

I think like anything you can't generalize something as good or bad. You need to apply your values to each situation and try to do what is best.

Dealing with overseas providers is not always about lower costs. Sometimes they have unique capabilities and products not available here.

I have found that the money you might save using overseas providers is offset by the added due diligence and communication and quality control required. These extras add 35-50% of the savings back into projects.

We've largely had good results with overseas providers in the few times we've used them. You need to go into it with realistic expectations and a good process.
Well, I'm going to respectfully disagree with those who equate work from other countries as poor quality. We run outsourced contact centers in the Philippines and consistently outperform all other suppliers, including any US based. In addition, it's a 60% discount. I would love to provide those services from here in the US however most clients, especially those in the corporate world will not even consider paying US rates. Are there poor quality providers? Yes, just like there are poor quality providers here in the US. The key is having a foundation and culture of quality principles and practices and using data and analytics to ensure you are providing excellent service and value-added insights. There are smart, talented and dedicated people everywhere not just in the US.
