How do you transition from residential to commercial work?

We're currently servicing mostly residential and are trying to get more into the commercial electrical work.

You have to be committed and recognized that there are guys who can do residential and those that can do commercial.

You will have two separate companies, good luck!

Residential and commercial projects are very different. Hiring electrician that specializes in those particular fields have made it easier for us.

Not knowing how your company is structured I would suggest slow and methodical.

Someone on your staff with commercial experience would help.

Find out all the NEC... understand bidding process. And never take a job until you look at it.

I would focus on residential and stay away from commercial. Residential is now money and good money. Commercial is 90 day money and not that good.

I’ve been doing electrical so long it just comes easy. The basic electrical theories are the same. You have different codes and different materials but in the end the results are the same.

Julia;

Nice getting to meet you

The answer is different for everyone. It takes More a personal touch to deal with residential work. Commercial work is more intense and time demanding. I personally have moved from residential to commercial to utility. I prefer Undergroud Utility work, I have place much time and a great deal of a investment in training, tools and equipment.

For everyone it’s different. I would suggest you start taking on some commercial work and studying the codes, even if it means taking some courses or partnering with a larger outfit. See if that takes your liking, you will need special tools, testers and equipment, but in the end it worth it. Your return on your investment will be very much greater and faster than in a residential application.

Take a leap of fate and just remember, never get into something halfway, through your entire life into it.

Invest in study materials, join Electrical groups, go to trade shows, invest in comprehension of the NEC and NFPA rules and articles

Last LOVE the work you do and LOVE the life you live.

It’s a GREAT trip to bring a loved one on

Wish you the best

Take care

We are a small company and the guys I have working for me have at least 25 years experience. All of our referrals are word of mouth. Most of the commercial jobs we do are small.
