How important is your brand to your business?"
I see so many bad design out there and wonder how important it is to both the business and how it's looked on by the client. As a business entity or startup do you feel it's primary or secondary yo your business model?

Brand: a loyalty award from customer for outstanding products, services, support and caring.
Branding: logos, colors, etc
The best logo isn't a brand. And the best branding isn't necessarily a business.
Branding is important, but the actual brand is given by customers, not by design folks.
Design folks can really do magic with branding, no doubt. And it's definitely needed by many different companies.
But I have yet to find a single person who honestly told me they bought a product or service solely because of the logo...

I've built an entire career around building strategy and creative for companies. My .02? If you have a service or product that's public facing, you can't prosper without developing great visual design and even better marketing strategy / storytelling.
B2B companies have a tendency to fall back on poor visual design more often. They don't have as strong of a need.
B2C companies are forced to confront their competition earlier and head-on. They're forced to build awesome brands or perish in obscurity.
Honestly, both B2B and B2C companies with poor branding end up eventually experiencing the same decline in sales, marketing difficulties, and talent retention losses. A B2B company just experiences it at a much slower pace.
And, sometimes, in certain cases, never experiences it at all. (Let's be real, does a wholesale grain company need a bangin' logo and killer marketing to sell wholesale barley to Post Cereal? Nope.)
When you encounter a poorly designed business in the wild, you shouldn't question whether brand and marketing are still important. They are, and always will be.
Instead, you should wonder if they're B2C, B2B, or if they'll ever have fierce competitors. And, what kind of serious connections that company has made in their career to build genuine trust with their customers. If a company can prosper with a god awful design, really poor marketing efforts, and zero brand story, they're doing something right- we're just not privvy to it. They don't need to keep fostering trust, they already have it somewhere else.
Hope this helps!
With that out of the way, I firmly believe that GREAT DESIGN is very important in the marketing and branding of a product and/or company. Example: NIKE — Don't tell me you didn't instantly think of NIKE's famous Swoosh.
Of course, design definitely is not the only important element, but if you have a great logo that is used in every piece of your advertising and marketing, it goes a long way toward keeping YOU in the mind of potential clients/customers.
What they see is how your business is perceived. Do you want to be regarded as “professional”? Then endeavor to LOOK professional!
Brand should be extremely important to any business. It is more than just a logo. You mentioned "bad design". What exactly are you referring to?
It's very! Yell it out or mention it a thousand times, it's all good! And it is primary!
Our BRAND is our business. Think about all the large companies out there..McDonald's, Starbucks, Nike. They are all BRANDS and household ones at that! Branding and the company logo/design should be a very integral part of your business. It should be primary to your business model. You can have it tell a story, be a literal name, a mnemonic for your product, or something that represents a larger idea. Make it special and unique to you. I just watched an episode of The Profit where Marcus talks about the importance of a business having a personal brand and not just a generic one. That is something to think about!
Not a matter of which is more important - they're all important and all integrated into your go-to-market strategy (or should be). You need a strong brand yes, but you really need marketing that will build on your brand awareness and your brand recognition. To do this properly you need to work on not just your logo but on your messaging (value prop, benefits, who we are, what we offer, why us, etc.), and your methods of delivery of the overall brand.
your logo is just a mark. your brand is everything.
