As others have said, it really depends on what kind of book, but I'm going to add to that: it depends on who you are, and what your relationship to your book is. E.g., are you a new fiction author no one's ever heard of before? Or are you an established expert who's now written a book to help build his reputation even more? Know who your target audience is, find out how to get in front of them, learn how they wish to be sold to, and then go for it. No point on paying for advertising a teen romance on FB, for example, unless you want the parents to buy it for the kids.

Give away something valuable on a topic related to your book in order to create an email list.  Then "tease" your email contacts to buy the book.  "Tease" means you give them ideas and excerpts from the book or related to the book that help them realize that they really want to read the whole book.

Hi Paul,

Well, let's find out more about you and your book.

What kind of book?

Are you doing any marketing for it now? If so what and how is it working for you?

Will it be sold online and or in stores?

Do you have a Facebook Page or any other Social Media?

Do you have a marketing budget, if so what does that look like?

I would like to help you, but we need to make sure that we are a good fit for you.

Dear Paul,

I wish I coud offer you a standard 'golden formula' but it's not. Every book is another story. One book might be successful in the market with a well-conceived social media campaign, another book might require even a somewhat traditional print advertising campaign and a third book might hit the bullseye of success with just one press release written in 30 minutes, sent out in another half an hour, resulting in a... world hit. Every book is another story in the midst of a competitive market.

Please feel free to contact me if you need me.

All the Best,

Hi Paul,

This guy is the best. Not sure if you've heard of him. Kary Oberbrunner. He is my publisher and he helps authors for more than any publishing company I have seen. They are selective about who they take on but once you have been accepted they do it all. Literally coaching, publishing, and then loads of assistance on helping you get your book out to the world. My whole company has been built off my book and I owe it to them. I liked his name to a webinar that explains all his publishing company offers and gives you a good idea about who he is.

Hope this helps, Niccie

What kind of book? Genre makes a difference.  For example, you wouldn't market a children's book the same way you'd market a history of WWII.

Print ads still matter, but few can afford them. First chapter download giveaways with an email marketing campaign can be very effective if you have a list, etc.

Paul,

It depends on the content of your book and your target audience.  As Chris stated, social media is good but your social media tactics will vary depending on the platform and the audience.

Usually, a good book marketing campaign includes inbound marketing (paid search / paid social) to capitalize on the queries of your target audience to drive them to your website.  Ideally, you'll want to create a conversion landing page where you can capture the lead (email and contact name) and enter into your database / email marketing.

In social media, you can also set-up audiences and look alike audiences to capture people who are likely to be interested in your book.  This is particularly helpful for self-help books.  You can also work a bit to join communities and groups to gain relevance and then offer your book to the group.

Giving people a free sample of the book is good as it allows them to get engaged with your book.  Similar to what Amazon does where you can read a chapter, people can get a feel for your book.  This will reduce the risk of buying your book sight unseen.

Again, depending on your book and your goals, there are other ways to capture qualified leads that can turn into books sales / downloads.
