That sales cycle was much different in many ways compared to what I'm currently doing in my business. As a photographer, I often call on national meeting planners who will be bringing a conference to my city. All of that initial correspondence is through email. I send introductory letters and proposals based on the conference dates and requirements. I'll follow up with an email because it less threatening these days. Often, I'll get a response as well as no response. I've become less emotionally attached to the proposal and the potential client response or lack there of.  I'm also at a point in my business development where I'm not feeling as desperate to get every piece of business because I come to know that not all business is good business, particularly psychologically. So, with that in mind, keep it simple and institute a strategy that you're going to do with the highest degree of consistency. That way we only have one personality and one mindset to manage and that's our own.

(more) In addition to the wonderful insights already provided, I'll continue to focus on some fundamental processes  I've incorporated into my life / work process. These items will be the commitments I'm going to make which requires investing A LITTLE TIME EACH DAY in some combination.  I will maintain my fitness which includes at least four to five days per week of effort. I cannot afford to be weak, sick or non functioning. If I we're to be overtaken by any one of these factors, their would be no business. So these activities are at the top of my list. It's like having a fancy vehicle that never has enough gas and a slow leak in one of the tires. At some point, your gonna get stuck somewhere.  Not a good place to be if the plan is to make gradual progress. I'll be consuming uplifting and inspiring information daily, through books, audio, articles and other sources. I'll read at least a book per month. I WILL NOT  be spending valuable time with toxic people or situations because it takes way to long to mentally detox from that crap. That's my psychological supplemental insurance program. I will continue to remind myself that consistency is not ever the issue but awareness is that element that needs constant development. My belief is that, time is always moving. Day becomes night and night becomes day. A constant ebb and flow. The variable is whether or not we do what we say we're going to do or will we fill up our time doing something else. In either case, effort is being expended (Consistency in action) which simply reminds us, that just like time, we are putting in motion a series of events that is going to lead to an outcome.  The great thing about this process, is that I get to choose to do or not do (Consistency in action). And know that whichever I choose, I will be getting good at something. Bitching, whining, not starting, or whatever, is still a something (Consistency in action). I will constantly remind myself that if I am moving, then I'm also improving in all those areas. No discrimination. Choose wisely. I'll continue to meet new people, exchanging ideas and offering my card when appropriate. Because in my business as a photographer, nothing happens until I make a genuine connection with someone. I'll continue developing my skill as a professional observer and I'll use my camera to document what my clients need me to capture for their future marketing needs.  I will travel both domestically and internationally because I love to travel and experience the renewal of my spirit that comes about from every aspect of the travel experience. (Slows down the aging process) You probably noticed that there wasn't much listed about the mechanics of my business process. That was very intentional because my years of experiences as a world class athlete has taught me that Mental Preparation is the most critical part of the process. We are either manufacturing stories that support our can do attitude or we become consumed by our self induced boogie man,I don't feel like it, the sky is falling, it can't be done, i'm not enough, stories that suck the life right out of our spirit. Back to the nice car with no gas and a slow leak. Simply put, keep the emotional tanks full and and all the items on the to do list, that we approach with a real commitment and intentionality, will get done. From there I get more specific in my planning and preparation so that 2019 will continue to be successful in many ways that important to me. Here's to growth in 2019

You’ll connect with who you're ment to connect with. I'm reminded more and more, pick a path and go because opportunities will emerge in ways we can't imagine. Stay open and cognitively flexible.   I work with a lot of non profits and a thought that came to mind is featuring and organization, key individuals, Significant locations ect, and the organization featured could assist with the marketing and selling perhaps as a fundraiser. Just thinking and typing.

Many of the states processes were still very new and there seems to always be more questions than answers. I remember sitting for 14 hours 8:00am to 10:00pm one day working to complete the processes. Uncertain if I had answered all the questions correctly, I hit the damn send button anyway. I few weeks later I received a notice that I had received my certification. Now what, I asked. A year ago's by and nothing. March 9th, 2015, I was reviewing the letter and email stating that it was time to renew. Reflecting on what felt like a big waste of time, I thought about it for the rest of that week. On Friday March 13, 2015, I received a call and an email from a representative of the City of Portland. The messages was, "Hi Naim, this is K....... from the City of Portland and I saw your name on the MWESB list and we're wondering if you'd be interested in working with the City of Portland. Please give us a call."  Shocked and surprised, I called her back and gathered details and about what was required by the City, which was the most frustrating and rewarding process all in one. Like, needing General Commercial Liability Insurance with coverage unto One Million dollars. 1,000,000.00. I'm thinking Holy Sh......., I'm just taking photos, not doing demolition.  So, I called my agent and explained the situation and he basically said, "Sure, that $540.00 for the year." Shocked by that answer, I asked him to explain,  because I'm thinking to myself, this is going to cost me a fortune.  Yes, he reassured me that it was only $540.00 per year and emailed both parties a Certificate of Insurance. Within two weeks, I had my first contract. Fast forward to 2018 and several small contracts later, we just signed a 5 year agreement $100K on-call agreement, with Bureau of Environmental Services , Ba  separate contracts Parks and Recreation (5 Year $50K) and Bureau of Transportation (5 year $100K) and Procurement Services. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be doing this work with the City. Let alone with four (4) different bureau. Truly a wonderful blessing. So, the moral to my story is, don't get overwhelmed by the perceived difficulty in whatever work is required. We have to do our part to prepare ourselves. Then let go and let God, the universe, Buddha, or whatever you call that force working in our lives, connect the dots.  It reminds me of a question I heard once. How many seeds are in and apple? and How many apples in a seed?  Just plant your seeds.

(more) My business, much like others mentioned, is not the kind of service that people want or need monthly. Well, general not the same client. So, that means I am networking constantly and building relationships. My goal, always, is to protect the credibility of my referral partners. So, when I show up to a job, always early, I'm there representing my referral partner first, and my business interest second. The Customer has to leave our interaction knowing that the referral partner has a great sence of judgment and their word means something. So, the next time when the customer needs photography services or knows of a another potential client, they are comfortable calling me directly. (That's happened twice this week alone).  I'm photographing projects that I never imagined I would be photographing.  Think about this. 60 ft under ground, riding a golf cart through 300- 500ft of tunnels and various large rooms, photographing Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing installations for a new 250 million Dollar Wastewater treatment plant. Or riding in a boat on our local river photographing miles of shoreline that's part of a river clean up project. Or taking aerial photos of a golf course so that the images could be used for marketing purposes. You see, when I started on this path July of 2002, drones didn't exist. And It was too cost prohibitive for me at the time, to even consider renting a helicopter. So, unless you could stand high on something, aerial photos was not even a real possibility. In conclusion, my perspective on the types of businesses I'm working with has changed. And I realize that growth is happening because of the willingness to say yes to projects or clients that don't match some old client profile.  Solely based on what I knew.  Again, I'm working with clients I never imagined I would be working with.  And one more thing. Unique certifications are attracing new clients. State Certified Minority Contractor, FAA approval to fly a Drone, General Commercial Liability Insurance to cover my drone services. And, clients always call at what seedms like the last minute. ( three calls like that this week) So, I've learned to not fill up my calendar with busy BS that mkae it so I'm not available. Batteries are charged and bags ar packed.  As my mentor reminds me "We have to stay ready to be ready" Other than that, there are no short cuts and we have to keep planting one seed at a time.

One group includes: Governments agencies of all types, Construction Companies of various sizes, and a variety of business representing many other sectors. This association meeting attracts about 120 guest to each meeting. The second Association focuses on Tourism within the state which has also lead to photo projects for National Associations across a variety of sectors.  There are opportunities to sponsor a networking event which entitles you give a short presentation on your business. I've had this opportunity at least twice per year the past couple of years. When I photograph an event, I'll make sure to get photos of the individuals I want to connect with. I'll take their card and email the photo with a note. Basically, there is no one way. It depends on your business type and the types customers you want to work with. I talk to people everywhere I go. I have business cards with me at all times. I'm posting to my website and social media, driving traffic. Linking to other sites.   Basically, using all the methods available to communicate to a prospect. Oh, yes, and all of this work takes lots and lots and lots of time. Every connection is like a seed being planted. They grow at their on pace. There are no short cuts for doing all the tedious work.

There have been times when I've also been concerned about being to forceful in a good way, to get paid sooner verses later. However, what I'm also realizing is that,  if I'm not assertive, then someone of my clients will pay when they remember to pay. Generally, After another email with my follow up invoice which for some is 30 days later. We just can't be shy about asking for the payment we agreed too. My mentor reminds me that If we're in business and not making any money, we're going out of business. Being paid sooner is critical to the life blood of the business. Cash has to flow. If your client and my client had an issue, they wouldn't hesistate telling us or just switching to a new service provider. We certainly can't be so attached to clients whose payment process drives us out of business. Our business is our responsibility.

Perhaps it's time to think about doing an end around. That's an old football term from years ago as a high school QB. Things I've come to know is that Branding may not be the issue. Time could be the factor. Pick a path, and continue to share your services through those like minded people that you already work with such as Schools, Families, Local Non-profits, other business assocaiations. ect. (Groups already mentioned). Think of yourself as a farmer. You don't get to plant a great seed one day and harvest in a week. This process as you know, take Tiiiimmmmmmmmmmeeeeee.  Over time, I found out about other industries such as Tourism and the Convention Business. That's a whole new world of possibilities. Imagine being at an event with 200 - 500 attendees where each one is a potential prospect for more convention business and as a default, Portraits, Wedding, Students, and the kind of images you never thought you would be photographing. Like, in my case, construction documentation.  The brand is not the images but the person producing the images. We are the Brand. People are choosing us because of how we make them feel when we are in their presence.  And we do great work as the added bonus. Maybe it's as simple as continuing to demonstrate how much you love what you do. Clients can feel that energy sometimes more than a cool layout. Be flexible. One of my mentors always reminds us that if you're in business and not making a profit, you're going out of business.
