(more) Gary  We are always looking for ways to improve our customer service and therefore attract new customer bases.  One way was to address the local college student population and put flyers up at the semesters end offering them to store their furniture with us until school started in the fall.  That was well received.  We have also developed a web page, Facebook, and other local media.  We also offer payment options through our banking institution which allows repeat customers to call and tell our secretary to apply the  payment and therefore not have to find time or worry about the office hours coinciding with their hours off.  Much of our customer base are repeat, word of mouth referrals but we do a lot of advertising on the free web base media like Yelp, Yellow Pages Online, etc.  I created a table for the web page and Facebook page that actually lists our unit sizes and pricing and also diagrams which give the prospective customer an idea of which size might fit their needs best

(more) In 2017 we evaluated our marketing strategy, and realized that approx. 65-70% of our business was mostly return customer or perhaps word of mouth referral in the community. We then looked at what we were paying for in advertisement. We still had a yellow pages ad that my father in law had taken out 30 years ago when he began the business. We had local restaurants with place mat advertising since this is a small community. We then began an evaluation of how effective these methods were. The most revealing question was when my own daughter stated most of the young adults her age 20+ don't even know what the yellow pages were. So we now have a Facebook page, Web site, and several Google ads. The other interesting fact was that we were able recognize an increased response in the 20+ age population as well as the 30-50 age group. We also captured a group from the local college, all without adjusting our operating budget because the cost of all these updates was still less than the original annual cost of the single yellow page ad. Our response is at least 80-90% effective when our secretary asks the client how they heard about us. we captured the other 30% of the market that didn't know we were here. Be careful when using Facebook, some people will use it as a platform for their issues, also be careful when googling or Pinterest cartoons because some of those are copy write proofed and y0u may end up paying for someones intellectual material

Glen We are a storage company so our proudest sales is being able to accommodate our customers needs, even if that means directing them to another company when we don't have the size unit they need. The biggest response that will hurt us is to respond in a knee jerk reflex and be defensive or to ignore it totally and appear as if you are hiding something. Your best response is to thank the critic for making you aware of the " problem" and if possible derail their negative comment by pointing out the positive aspects or measures that you/your company have taken regarding this even if it is something you already do as a company.
