Easy. Go to the nearest auto parts store, and ask the guys behind the desk to make you a list of everyone who comes in to buy new windshield wiper blades. These are the people you need as new clients! Tell them you will need to paint their house every 6 months. Why do you think they're buying new windshield wiper blades? Because it says so right on the package! REPLACE WIPER BLADES EVERY 6 MONTHS. You need clients that think like that, and after not too long, marketing for you will be a thing of the past. If you paint one house a week, all you need is 26 new clients and you're on autopilot. Repaints here we come (every 6 months)!
We are an independent shipping center that offers many services.
We gladly accept local artists work (2 artists at a time) to display their work on a contingency basis.
Do not bother with franchises...they can’t make decisions and you’d be dealing with a local businessperson.
It works great for our store because it gives it a unique look every few months and gives a local artist a chance.
We do not select everyone but as long as we feel the work is a good fit and even if it doesn’t sell...it gives you free exposure!
Hope this helps.

Branding is important. People will remember what you do by visually associating your business with a memorable image.
Having a place for people to find you online is a necessary piece of the puzzle.
Couple that with the suggestions of others below to stand out from the crowd.
Work with professionals that have contacts with buyers that need your services - real estate agents (buyers, sellers, renting), contractors, cleaning services - all are good places to start. Seek out networking groups, and don't forget to ask for referrals.
Show works on a regular basis in credible venues Gallery, Art villages, invite prospective clients to informal get together’s in your home or studio, write a column about your works influences, get a teaching job so you have money coming in between sales, lower. Your prices if a credible offer is made. Better to have more collectors than pay to store works. My philosophy. Keep reinventing yourself by leaning and inventing new techniques: Artist/curator judith Schwab
My work is 95% referral but when I get slow maybe one or two months out of the year I will call old customers look on craigslist ,call general contractors, call property managers etc. there’s plenty of work out there you have to find it if you don’t have it ! You just need to be good and responsible at what you do ! Good luck !
Hey George! Get involved within your community, find one or two networking groups where you can give/receive referrals, the point is to put your face out there and build trust which is key for people to refer you, then work will come. Keeping communication open and clear and finishing every job right is what would keep you busy. Always leave the working area cleaner than what it was before you started the project (rule). Last but not least.. keep a smile on your face while being honest. Cheers!
George - I am a word of mouth painting contractor. My marketing consists of a business card and a "end of drove way sign". So that said, our pricing is not the lowest, we deliver a quality product that we stand behind, we are courteous and respectful of our work space, we return phone calls promptly. 97% of my work is in the town I live in. People like my team and how we do our work but it took time to develop our reputation.
Advertise, Advertise, Advertise. Find and make a list of businesses to drop off a card and go introduce your self and your services you offer, interior designers, builders, realtors etc. call your past clients and ask for referrals. Each year i send out emails to all the above to stay in touch and to let them know that i am here to take care of there business needs.always thank your clients for the work they have given, and just a little saying of mine is “ you didn’t just get me for a day you have me for life”
