If you spent a considerable amount of money at a well-established restaurant and the food was awful along with the service, would you actually say something?

I would ask to speak to a manager. They will care to discuss directly with you to learn of the issues, have a chance to make it right, and also use the details to address with their staff.

Absolutely.  I would want to treat as I would like to be treated.  I must preface by saying that I did not always voice my disappointment.  Not to sound corny, but I think it comes with maturity and confidence.  It is important to present your concerns in a way that would help the restaurant correct the problem, especially if it is a restaurant that you want to see succeed.  I have been both yelled at and been taken aside in a pleasant manner by patrons with issues with their experience.  I appreciate being made aware of a situation that I may have been blinded to in a constructive and non-hostile manner.  My goal is to build loyal customers through great food and service.  I sometimes fall short, but it is these loyal customers that most often offer constructive criticism and want to see the business prosper.

This may sound crass, but I can't fix it if I don't know it's broken.  Once I know, I will do my best to fix it.

I personally like constructive creationism, so as part of my being I would mention it to the manager or the owner.

As a co-owner of a restaurant myself, I would definitely ask to speak with Management to address a problem.  The owners and management can't fix a problem they might not know about.  I'd just make sure to address the problem proactively so the business has a chance to fix it before it becomes a real problem.  More often than not, business owners appreciate the chance to better their business by receiving unbiased feedback regarding their customer's experiences.

Yes.  The manager directly or in a email.   If horrible all around the a yelp review  (management, chef, owner etc. Acted horrid to me and my party after trying to talk to them directly is when Yelp and Google reviews are put into play).

I only give good yelp reviews as I believe that negativity is not necessarily a good emotion to put on the internet and it helps no one.

If you have a problem at any business whether it be a restaurant, hotel or motel always inform management first before giving a negative review.  Unfortunately today we have many people out their that simply feel uncomfortable talking to management or owners and would rather talk to yelp or google as they feel empowered, a weak person loves to have some form of control and today the internet has given it to them.  Today we also have many business owners with this same problem as I see it all of the time,  they are usually not in business for the long haul. As a business owner all you can do is the best you can do, you will never please everyone so you just have to make sure the ones you please give a review.

Definitely. Never would I take my disappointment and lay it on my server. I would ask for the manager and explain the situation. I would express my feelings and explain the specifics. What the manager says and how they react determines whether or not I return. I find it petty and stupid to leave awful reviews on any social media site. Those reviews are destructive.

Chris, say something, or don't go back! Here people tell you...give a star and write how awful it was so other people can see and make up their mind so we can put that establishment out of business soon or later?? Whats the point of a review people? Don't you ever ear the saying ( if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all?) People that take their time to give someone a bad review have no heart! I go out to eat all the time, sometimes is great, sometimes it sucks...SO WHAT? We are all humans, right? So, unless your intention is to help someone...just let it go!

In general, yes.

But it depends on whether the service person seems open to hearing the news. If the service is not up to the feedback (you can tell, pretty much right away), then I just don't go back. You rarely get a good result by saying something.

I worked for decades in restaurants. Service is so important. A great server can transform an awful food experience into an acceptable, even a great one, by listening sincerely and then delivering quality.

Unfortunately, even great food cannot correct truly awful service. And very few people give feedback to an awful service person. Life is too short for the conflict and awkwardness that ensues.
