While art certainly serves us, do we really need it, or do we simply desire it?

I believe that we really need art in the same way you need to have uplifting and positive experiences in life.  Art, whether through the act of creating or observing, can increase joy and has a positive impact on your mental health. So yes, we need art.
We NEED it....art in any form is healing, it is inspiring! Even fine art, if a picture "speaks" to you, you should purchase it and treasure it. As an Artist, Art is a part of my life and has helped me grow as a person, Emotionally and Spiritually.
Here in Roanoke, people like to LOOK at art, but they do not want to BUY it.  I've had people look at every single picture I had on display, say "Nice work", then walk away.  I call that   "fake praise" or "artificial compliments", stuff artists really don't need.  Yes, I was at the Festival in the Park this year for the first time.  It was SO HOT.  Other booths near me had few people buying, so it  was likely the heat.  At that type of event, with vendors of all types, people just walk and look, with no intention of buying anything.  Makes me feel like putting a box with a slot in it on the table by a sign saying, "Dear Looker, please drop $1 in the box if you are not buying anything.  I depend on sales.  Your donation will help defray the cost of the booth."  Of course, that's inappropriate behavior on my part, but I'm sure other frustrated artists feel that way, too.  Next year, if I attend, may be totally different, so we'll see.   I may try a few high school "band boosters" this fall.  It's important to remember that just because "this" event was not successful, does NOT mean all shows will have negative results.
Some of us need quality original art, as it is like having friends around.  And they are no trouble; a very necessary positive influence.  Please visit us at at averygallery.com
I do believe deep down each one of us would love to have an original piece of art no matter who the artist.  It is a piece that you can proudly show on you special wall in your home and show it off.  Later, perhaps add to it with other pieces by the same artist or other artists.
I definitely think are is needed. Art is interpretation, no one views art the same. So in it self interpretation is an art. Visual arts inspire, music  can do many things. So unless someone would want a world without  music, or dance, or any other art form yes its necessary.

Art is humanity. We’ve been creating art as Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. It’s entirely possible we will discover others in the Hominidae family who also have created art.
Yes, we need art to express ourselves and our true purpose. Using my creative talents to help others is my purpose. Whether it's to inspire, educate, or simply ease someone else's pain art is more than a commodity.
Art is like religion; and food for the soul:  a necessity to life, no matter the flavor.
