When we see something we like because we feel excited about it, our brain releases some dopamine. Dopamine is a brain chemical that helps you focus. When you focus on art, you help your brain focus better.
So, do we need to focus? If you answer yes, then you can also say we need art. Without art, why would we look at anything?
Nature is art! I am grateful for art because it adds to the beauty of our wonderful world!
Art is not a need in the sense of survival mode such as food and water are. But art is a need in the sense that it provides beauty where there is not. Beauty raises your happy feelings such as serotonin and endorphin levels which in return gives you good feelings. Good feelings are inspiring and influential on your day. So ask yourself the question, do you need good feelings? Do you need inspiration? My answer is Yes, we need inspiration, we need to be able to learn from history though art, we need to be able to understand the human race through art. If there was no art we would loose history in its sense because words alone cannot convey the fullness of reality.
First, define art in the broadest terms. If you mean “painting,” then no—everyone neither wants nor needs a painting.
If, on the other hand, you include music, dance, cooking, storytelling, all of the arts and crafts, poetry, and everything else that might be covered in a broad definition of art, then, yes—everyone needs art.
And people find art in dust which makes sunbeams and starlight.
I can only speak for myself. I need my painting to fulfill myself. I know it doesn't bring in good income to survive but with my painting, I'm willing to live with minimum. In other words, I don't expect to drive a new car or live in big house. My paintings fulfill my need and I'm never bored. In other words, I really need it. Desire is something many Art students think they want but look how many graduates after spending years studying are even holding a brush! I hope this answer your question.
We absolutely need it especially when it comes to music. Music serves a purpose for more than just entertainment, music heals, it causes us to reflect, it soothes, it hypes us up, brings enjoyment, it inspires us, makes us think, makes us dream, it gives sound to vision just to name a few things.
Visual art does some of the same including tapping into our imagination. Different people can look at a the same piece of artwork but yet walk away with different perspectives of what they just saw. Art is the silver lining of life both for the creator and the consumer
Physical needs and wants are easier to divide: we only need air, food, water, clothing, housing. Psychological needs are harder to pin down. The fact that we can last for a long time without art doesn't mean it isn't important to us. Given time, every society there ever was invented art of some sort, which pretty much answers the question.
It is my belief that we only desire it. Just as an artist desires to make art. It has been found that even very early humans had the desire to leave their marks on caves, rocks, trees, etc. It is the nature of humans to be creative. We can’t help but do it. That is the difference between us and all other animals. Still, even though it is a desire that seems unavoidable, it is not a requirement.
As an artist, I can only offer that I was born with the desire to create art. I originally was a painter, tried printing, especially etching, and fell in love again. Later I went thru phases of collages, 3D Assemblages, and now digital Photographic Montages. I am happiest when I am in my studio alone creating a new image that I hope will 'talk' to the viewer. I am also a collector when I find that someone else's artwork draws me inside that image. I am only limited by my budget in this endeavor.
We don't need art to survive the way we need food and shelter but our hearts, minds and our souls are certainly better for having art in our lives. Whether we create the art or just enjoy it in our homes it certainly adds elements of beauty, excitement or wonder to our lives.
