How We Got Started

After a successful career in the consumer products industry, I realized the business building experience I had achieved could be best used by helping business owners get the most from their own businesses. So I opened a business coaching company and began sharing my expertise.

I use a system called Benchmark Email.  It's mostly for collecting contact data from people who visit my website and for sending out newsletters. Everything else is done from Outlook. I'm seeing a struggle with being able to meet operating costs under the current restrictions.  Businesses that find ways to reduce their operating foot print and concentrate on delivering a better but more narrow suite of products and services will emerge leaner, stronger and more sustainable.  I... (more) I'm seeing a struggle with being able to meet operating costs under the current restrictions.  Businesses that find ways to reduce their operating foot print and concentrate on delivering a better but more narrow suite of products and services will emerge leaner, stronger and more sustainable.  I think the biggest lesson learned is being more financially astute about the cost of operating your business.

I believe that all businesses are solutions for someone's problem. If you want to build trust that will reward you at some future point, help the client or customer solve their problem without expecting anything in return.  When people realize you are there to help them, they will reciprocate,... If you want to build trust that will reward you at some future point, help the client or customer solve their problem without expecting anything in return.  When people realize you are there to help them, they will reciprocate, either by becoming a customer or recommending you to their friends  based on the experience.

(more) Interior Designers, like other businesses like this suffer from a perception of being way too expensive. People fail to recognize that new ideas are what bring rooms, homes or offices to life. Unless you can demonstrate that you have an eye for arrangement that WOWs your clients, it will be difficult to move beyond this point. Go to school on your clients.  Where do you do your best, most transformational work, and for whom?  Don't be shy about your specialty, promote it!  Be known as the designer that specializes in certain situations. Once people understand how remarkable your abilities are, you will have more than enough clients to work with.

I learned that even devastating loses can be turned into thriving businesses. 11 years ago, I invested in a start up franchise.  They were small but their business model was incredibly well through out.  Two and a half years later, they filed BK due to lack of funding.  I lost about $100k.  It... (more) I learned that even devastating loses can be turned into thriving businesses. 11 years ago, I invested in a start up franchise.  They were small but their business model was incredibly well through out.  Two and a half years later, they filed BK due to lack of funding.  I lost about $100k.  It was devastating. I subsequently rebuilt the business and altered the model to reflect what I thought was a better service delivery.  Last year was the best I've ever had. After the bankruptcy, I could have left the business as som nay others did.  But I believed in the service and I was committed to making it succeed.  Inner belief was the key and the willingness to change what wasn't working with strategies that did.

I send holiday cards if I know they are appropriate for the client and I have a close relationship with them.  Otherwise, I avoid the practice.  I think there are other ways to acknowledge your appreciation for the client's business. I use to 'mine' the internet for places where prospective clients might be hiding.  I stopped doing this as soon as I realized that simply trying to embed myself in their stream of cyber consciousness was not enough. Then I learned about 'Authority Based Marketing' and it changed how I showed up... (more) I use to 'mine' the internet for places where prospective clients might be hiding.  I stopped doing this as soon as I realized that simply trying to embed myself in their stream of cyber consciousness was not enough. Then I learned about 'Authority Based Marketing' and it changed how I showed up in person and on the internet.  Rather than hunting and chasing prospects, I turned to building an authoritative brand.  I learned how my best current clients think and make decisions on services similar to mine.  Then, I created content that spoke to those issues. Now that my brand is established as an authority in the area of professional development and business growth, the people I want to do business with find me. As I spend more time and focus on networking activity, I find it paying offer much better.  I'm better able to select the organizations and events I attend and I'm more discerning about who I develop relationships with.  I believe tech connections will only take you so far.  Without more personal... (more) As I spend more time and focus on networking activity, I find it paying offer much better.  I'm better able to select the organizations and events I attend and I'm more discerning about who I develop relationships with.  I believe tech connections will only take you so far.  Without more personal interaction, it's tough, sometimes, to really evaluate who you are dealing with. If you have a reputation for helping other people get what they want, face to face networking with always pay out.
